Code Hero raises over $100000 for shooter that teaches computer programming

Over the years, there have been a lot of efforts to create games that make learning how to program a computer simple and fun, with widely variable results. But indie developer Primer Labs seems to have hit on something special with Code Hero, a first-person shooter that teaches JavaScript and UnityScript programming by letting players fire bits of code that actually affect the environment. The group recently reached its Kickstarter funding goal of $100,000 for the project, and is still looking for last-minute donations to help fund a multiplayer mode.

Despite the name, Code Hero is much more like Portal or Minecraft than Guitar Hero, according to its creators, but “instead of making blocks or portals, you shoot Javascript” that executes when it hits its target. Bits of code can do anything from moving a platform down (position.z-=2) to blowing up stuff (add(ForceTransform(1000000))). “Editing code is actually a lot of fun when you look at it from the perspective of a game you can play with it,” Primer Labs’ Alex Peake said in the game’s Kickstarter introduction.

The team has been “eating ramen or worse” to make a beta version of the game, which got an amazing response at last year’s Minecraft-focused Minecon convention in Las Vegas, Peake said. Despite the ambitious nature of the project, the $100,000 budget goal was designed to fund the team of four programmers and two artists for six months of work. They hit that goal with roughly two days left before tonight’s funding deadline, thanks to a sudden surge of promotional interest from sites like reddit. Now the team has set a new target of $200,000 in funding so it can hire an experienced Unity developer to help create a multiplayer mode.

Backers can get access to the final game with a donation of as little as $1, a price Peake says was set so low because “we’re not about the margin or the cost or the monetization—we’re about the programmerization.” The Kickstarter page laments the fact that, despite the enormous impact of computers on society and the world, “less than 1 percent of humans can code.”

Indeed, the team can be a bit grandiose in its ambitions to change the world through its game. “We believe in a world where knowledge becomes playable, and we believe it’s not up to us to make it, it’s just up to us to teach you to make the games that need making, to change the things that need changing, so we can create the world we wish to see by coding the change we wish to see in the world,” Peake says in the video introduction.

The funding success makes Code Hero one of only a handful of game-related Kickstarter projects to raise a six-figure sum through the service, including the still-growing, $2+ million raised by Double Fine for its adventure game project. While that’s still next to nothing in the world of AAA game development, it’s further proof that new funding models can help bring ambitious, offbeat games to life, as long as there’s a provable demand from the players.

Seeking just-right American dream

George and Linda (Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston) are not living the dream but it is, tantalizingly, within reach. They’ve just bought a “micro-loft” (you’d call it a studio) in the West Village. George is about to bag a promotion. Surely Linda will sell her documentary (about penguins with cancer) to HBO.

Cut to the disillusioned couple in a battered car en route to Atlanta where they plan to crash with George’s brother until they regain their financial footing. Instead, these uneasy riders find, and lose, themselves at an “intentional community” (you’d call it a commune) called Elysium.

This countercultural Brigadoon populated by shaggy square pegs and passive-aggressive druggies is the proving ground for their relationship in Wanderlust, David Wain’s riotous, raunchy, and more than a little raggedy showcase for Rudd’s improv genius and Aniston’s airy groundedness. He is gut-busting funny, she gently ticklish – ideal comic rapport.

(Rudd and Aniston have worked together before, wonderfully, as the straight girl and her gay crush in The Object of My Affection. They have chemistry. Not to mention biology and physics.)

Like Albert Brooks’ similarly themed Lost in America, Wanderlust is less a forward-moving story than a string of self-contained scenes, variations on the theme of the American dream.

Is their postage-stamp-sized apartment in New York, where no matter their achievement they never feel successful enough, George and Linda’s idea of fulfillment? Is it the Atlanta McMansion of George’s brother, Rick (Ken Marino), which resembles a showroom for products advertised in Skymall magazine? Is it Elysium, the orchard by the lake, where hippie graybeards (Alan Alda), preening peacocks (Justin Theroux), and politically correct attack dogs (Kathryn Hahn) live together in an old Victorian without doors or other boundaries?

George and Linda are like Goldilocks. As they sample the alternatives, one seems too confined, the second too materialistic, the third too unstructured. Where do you go in America if you don’t want a lifestyle, but a life?

Less interested with actually answering this question than with giving its players opportunities to be hilarious, the screenplay by Wain (Role Models, Wet, Hot American Summer) and Marino is purely functional.

Rudd rises to the occasion, and then some. After the cramped quarters in New York, George is delighted with the elbow room of Elysium, as well as the flirty glances of Eva (Malin Akerman). The pretty blonde reminds him that at no-rules Elysium, the one rule is free love. The (obviously improvised) sequence in which George rehearses before the mirror how he will seduce Eva reduced me to a puddle of giggle.

As Seth in this comic bakeoff, Theroux (writer of Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2) nearly succeeds in stealing Rudd’s comic lightning. Playing a character whose confidence makes George feel more insecure, Seth woos Linda with his virtuoso guitar playing and acrobatic moves.

The way she keeps a serene, straight face as these jokers spin out of control is one of Aniston’s many underappreciated gifts. Like Dean Martin, she skillfully ropes in the maverick partner for maximum comic effect. She is the reality principle that makes the surrealistic stunts funnier.

It’s an R-rated movie with a fair amount of nudity, a lot of sexual candor, truckloads of unspecified drugs, and more laughs than I’ve had at the movies in a very long time.

Your Resource For Learning About HTML5 – Making things that we already do much …

A webinar recap and some awesome resources to help familiarize you with HTML5, particularly for Geo web developers – I’ll admit it, I’m not too up on my HTML5, however, that doesn’t mean that I’m not interested in this hot technology!

Like many of you, the topic of HTML5 is on my mind and rightfully so – when you hear statements like HTML is likely the future of Geo web programming you pause and take notice! Luckily there’s some fine learning opportunities and resources available to help get introduced to this key enabling technology.

Just today (Feb 23 while I’m writing this) Eesri is hosting a webinar titled “Learn to Use HTML5 with Esri ArcGIS” – the event is streamed live 3X during the day and I’m told the session will be archived online in the near future for those who can’t attend.

Hosted by Andy Gup of Esri’s EDN program (he’s driving the bus) and assisted by Derek Swingley (of the ArcGIS for API Javascript team) the 45 minute webinar (See Learn to Use HTML5 with Esri ArcGIS ) is designed to educate users on how HTML5 can be used with your Esri web mapping projects and also give you a bit of a foundation as to what HTML5 is all about. Kicking off the session, Gup put it nicely by commenting that HTML5 is essentially all about making things that we already do much easier. You might be asking, What is html5? Well, that was also answered for us… Essentially, it’s a combo of 3 technologies – html, cascading style sheets (css3) and JAvaScript. The power it offers users is using all 3 technologies together.

Gup jumped right in and provided some demos and described what you can accomplish with HTML5. One of the best ways of learning is simply by doing so Gup suggests that users take advantage of the wealth of resources, code, docs, and other useful tidbits availble from the ArcGIS Resource Center. Of particular interest see the section on the ArcGIS API for Javascript (see HTML5 tab) with numerous samples including details of the geolocation API  – see also the main page at links.esri.com/javascript

From the webinar, some key points about ArcGIS and HTML5:

  • Supported in current versions of all major web browsers – get the users approximate location – user can elect to share their location once, always, never.

  • No, there will be no ArcGIS API for html5

  • HTML5 is the next standard for HTML and includes new semantic tags (describing the page meaning), new form elements, several new APIs (like geolocation)
  • Diff mobile browsers support different features so thats a consideration.
  • Easier and more simple to build complex apps than ever before!
  • Offers several new types of markup, including: simplified DocType (specifies mode to render the page and triggers validation), now, simply a !doctype html, also new header and footer tags – much less code and less time to write the code.HTML 4 had many input types (button checkbox etc…) now with HTML5 many new options

For new developers, an easy way to create code is via the CSS3 generator css3generator.com – See also caniuse.com and also a useful site with compatibility tables at html5rocks.com – and from Chris Whelm @cwhelm he suggests http://dabblet.com/ for sample code.

Additional Features enabled by HTML5:

  • Drag and drop API enables the user to drag and rop files or objects (like images)
  • A filesystem API enables creation, read, write of files
  • The geolocation API – provides approximate location only (more accurate if used on smartphone)
  • Recall theres 2 methods of grabbing location, get location or watch for continuous updates
  • Web workers is a way to run scripts in the background – keeps the UI fluid while processing continues in the background
  • CORS and polygon buffering
  • Access to browser history and the ability to manipulate the content
  • CSS3 and some of the new elements – transforms, shadows, border radius (enhance an element with rounded corners), animations

Node.js tools: Server-side JavaScript comes of age


Node-inspired development environments and cloud platforms are redefining the Web application stack

The story of Node.js reads like it came from a Hollywood script assembly line: Some kids are monkeying around with scrap they picked up around
the Internet and find a new way to snap it together. The next thing you know, they’re lapping the pack at the racetrack and
coasting to the winner’s circle.

In technical terms, the Node.js team, which is largely led by Ryan Dahl, began looking for a new way to serve up documents from a website without chewing up as much RAM as the traditional tools.
They grabbed a copy of the V8 JavaScript engine to speed up their code, then created simple libraries that connected the V8
engine to the TCP/IP ports. Presto change-o, it was answering requests very quickly.

Once people noticed the speed, they started actually using the tool and the challenges began. It’s easy to make a car by bolting
together spare parts that are lying around, but it’s an entirely different task to make something that can carry a load or
stand up to the daily commute. The first version of Node ran from a command line containing the name of the file where the
instructions were stored. That’s not a great way to run a big, stable, professional website.

The scruffy, junkyard quality of the Node realm is rapidly disappearing as programmers build extras for Node as quickly as
Node itself was born. Now Node is more of an ecosystem, with its own conference and a collection of tools that orbit around it. There are IDEs, deployment tools, and companies looking to offer Node hosting
as a service. All are helping to transform Node from science experiment to real contributor in the data center and the cloud.

These tools aren’t luxury goods yet. They’re largely the first builds, which means there are rough spots and glitches. They
are typically small, simple, and far from full-featured solutions, but they’re also a chance for the Node users to rethink
what did and didn’t work with the previous generation of Web tools. Node is addressing some of the problems people have found
with the traditional stack and fixing them.

They’re also rediscovering some of the reasons why the previous generation of Web developers did many of the things they did.
It’s a bit of a stretch to say that Node exists because it can be so costly to allocate the RAM to start up a new thread,
but the Nodesters are beginning to understand why the last line of programmers created the threads in the first place. There
are already a number of angry posts about Node filled with four-letter words because the JavaScript callback paradigm is too
unnerving.

To understand a bit of the excitement coming from this corner of the Net, I spent some time unpacking the Node tools and putting
them through simple tasks. The more I experimented, the more I found. The area is growing quickly, and this summary is already
incomplete as I file it. The good news is that the ground is incredibly fertile. Node.js has revealed that running a website
doesn’t need to be that complicated. The tools it is spawning may not be perfect yet or ready for everything an enterprise
requires, but they’re real and they’re beginning to play a role.

Identity Theft Rose 13 Percent in 2011 with Help from Social Media and Smart …

Fueled in part by the rise in the use of smart phones and social media by consumers, as well as a large number of data breaches, identity theft incidents in the United States rose by 13 percent in 2011 to affect nearly 12 million Americans, according to the ‘2012 Identity Fraud Report: Social Media and Mobile Forming the New Fraud Frontier’ survey released by Javelin Strategy Research. The report found that identity theft increased by 13 percent in 2011 as more than 11.6 million adults became victims in the United States. However, while the number identity theft incidents increased, the dollar amount stolen remained steady. In addition, consumer out-of-pocket costs from identity theft have decreased by 44 percent since 2004, mostly due to improved prevention and detection tools. Other key findings of the survey include:

  • Social media behaviors put consumers at risk of identity theft: The survey found certain social media behaviors had higher incidence rates of identity theft than all consumers. Despite warnings that social media networks are a great resource for identity theft, consumers still share a significant amount of personal information frequently used to authenticate a consumer’s identity. Specifically, 68 percent of people with public social media profiles shared their birthday information, 63 percent shared their high school name, 18 percent shared their phone number, and 12 percent shared their pet’s name – all examples of personal information a company would use to verify an individual’s identity.
  • Smart phone owners experienced greater incidences of identity theft: The survey found seven percent of smartphone owners were victims of identity fraud, a one-third higher incidence rate compared to the general public. Part of this increase may be attributed to consumer smart phone behavior, as 32 percent of smart phone owners did not update to a new operating system when it became available, 62 percent did not use a password on their home screen – enabling anyone to access their information if the phone is lost – and 32 percent saved login information on their device.
  • Data Breaches increased causing more damage from identity theft: The survey found another likely contributing factor to the rise in identity theft was the 67 percent increase in the number of Americans impacted by data breaches in 2011 compared to 2010. Victims of data breaches were 9.5 times more likely to be a victim of identity theft than consumers who did not receive a data breach letter. 

Now in its ninth consecutive year, the Javelin Strategy Research survey is the nation’s longest-running study of identity theft, which is defined as the unauthorized use of another person’s personal information to achieve illicit financial gain. As for the methodology used for the survey, Javelin conducted a survey of a representative sample of 5,022 U.S. adults, including 818 identity theft victims, in October 2011 to identify important findings about the impact of identity theft. This is not your typical modern war

“ACT OF VALOR” is not your typical modern war movie – it stars real Navy SEALs, and the Department of Defense had final cut.

From the get-go, filmmakers Scott Waugh and Mike McCoy wanted their SEALs-in-action combat movie to be realistic. They hired SEALs as military advisers, then decided to eliminate the middleman (goofball actors) and simply hire the SEALs to fill the commando roles. Who among you who has seen “Navy SEALs” (or “Tropic Thunder”) could argue?

“Valor” is an interesting experiment, unlike anything since Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy re-enacted his World War II heroics in “To Hell and Back,” but keyed to an [action-hungry audience raised on video games.

The acting is . . . well, it’s often not that great. Sorry, Chief Dave and Lt. Rorke. Please don’t snap my neck like a twig. On the other hand, we get what feels like an authentic look at how SEALs operate, fight, interrogate (there’s an amusing QA sequence here with a real SEAL debriefer sparring with a terrorist financier).

Directors Waugh and McCoy are former stunt men who’ve directed lushly photographed action-oriented sports documentaries (“Step Into Liquid”), and bring their knack for visual panache along with them.

In a boffo early sequence, the SEALs rescue a kidnapped CIA agent. Men parachute in, speed boats parachute in, and there is a nifty montage of armed assault, snipering, truck chases and speedboat extraction.

It’s gorgeously shot, smartly edited (the filmmakers use a lot of helmet-cam perspective for boots-on-the-ground authenticity) – which raises a sticky question: Should realistic combat look this awesome? Should it be so much fun to watch?

The raid obtains intelligence that sets the same globe-trotting SEAL team on the trail of a terrorist fanatic who is bringing ultra-deadly, high-tech explosive vests into the United States.

Can you imagine, asks the bomb maker, what will happen when the explosive gel detonates and sends a million ceramic bearings flying in all deadly directions? Well, we don’t have to, because the movie can’t resist showing us – and getting off on the lethal display.

The movie also invites us to thrill at the omnipotence of the SEALs. They’re the best-trained, best equipped fighters in the world. They have the best weapons, the coolest stuff, can strike anywhere, at any time.

And yet SEALs in “Act of Valor” are not supermen. They get shot. They get wounded. They die. The movie closes with a poem by Shawnee Chief Tecumseh, used to explain the warrior code of the SEALs, their ethic of fearless sacrifice.

Tecumseh, of course, became the middle name of union General William Sherman.

And Sherman had his own view of war and sacrifice.

“There is many a boy here who looks upon war as all glory. But boys, it is all hell.”

You wonder if the Department of Defense would have approved that line.

Who’s adding DRM to HTML5? Microsoft, Google and Netflix

With tech companies abandoning the proprietary Flash and Silverlight media players for HTML5, it was inevitable somebody would try to inject DRM into the virgin spec.

Microsoft, Google and Netflix are that “somebody”, having submitted a proposed modification to HTML5 to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for “encrypted media extensions”.

Their proposed addition, detailed here and picked apart here, has drawn a flat rejection from HTML5 editor and Google employee Ian Hickson, who’s called the encrypted media extensions unethical.

Hickson wrote in response to Microsoft’s Adrian Bateman who floated the proposal on Monday: “I believe this proposal is unethical and that we should not pursue it.”

Bateman drew fire by revealing Microsoft, Google and Netflix had been working on an API to enable encrypted media in HTML “that we think can be implemented in all browsers and support any container/codec and content encryption without making major changes to the HTML Media element specification”.

Batemen said “many” content and application providers reckon they can’t use the audio and video elements in HTML5 because they “lack robust content protection”.

Hickson responded that the companies’ proposal doesn’t provide robust content protection either, so it would not address this issue “even if it wasn’t unethical”. Hickson didn’t elaborate on what he meant by unethical.

The video and audio tags in HTML5 offered the prospect of delivering media online in a vendor-neutral format. Traditionally, video and music were added to a web page via a plug-in, such as the proprietary Flash, QuickTime and Silverlight from Adobe. Apple and Microsoft use compression and decompression codecs such as the equally proprietary and patent encumbered H.264, co-authored by the two firms among others. Open sourcers fell back on the patent-free Ogg Theora.

The benefit of players such as Flash, QuickTime and Silverlight – to media companies, at least – has been it’s possible to control who sees your stuff based on factors including region and payment. When it was developing Silverlight, Microsoft made a big deal about adding DRM and when shunting Silverlight aside for HTML5 a lack of similar controls was raised as a source of concern.

The attempt to claw back the safety of DRM – digital rights management aka copy protection – should come as little surprise.

But what about the presence of Google and Netflix? Google is no friend to Microsoft or H.264, and in 2010 open sourced the VP8 video codec to free the web from H.264. Netflix, meanwhile, is not a tech company and is what’s known in “the biz” as a customer and is also far smaller than Microsoft or Google.

Google’s problem is YouTube and Google TV. Google might like VP8 philosophically, but – to our best knowledge – hardly anybody is using it.

Instead, the majority of content on YouTube is built for Flash and this will be played via Google TV. If Steve Jobs was right, HTML5 will supplant Flash. Google can’t afford to upset the corporate makers of film, TV and music on YouTube by making it impossible to let them control the distribution of their content.

Netflix, meanwhile, is trying to grow an online streaming business out of its original DVD rental service. Netflix was an early Silverlight adopter and must now recognise the future is HTML5 thanks to Microsoft’s acceptance of the Jobsian vision. It, like Google, will want to stay on the right side of media producers.

As an interesting footnote, Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings also sits on the Microsoft board.

Microsoft’s Bateman has tried to bulletproof the encrypted media extensions proposal by saying: “No ‘DRM’ is added to the HTML5 specification, and only simple clear key decryption is required as a common baseline.”

It’s typical for IT vendors to adopt standards and then extend them in their own software. However, the extensions Microsoft, Google and Netflix are proposing, though, could become enshrined as an official W3C standard that’s supposed to be vendor neutral. ®

Adobe vows 5 to 10 more years of Flash advances

Even as the company redirects efforts to HTML5 and narrows Flash’s scope, Adobe is also promising investments in Flash for 5 to 10 years.

Last year, Adobe Systems narrowed Flash Player’s scope. It canceled the browser plug-in for mobile devices. It shifted development resources toward competing Web standards.

But it’s not giving up on Flash.

In an attempt to patch up communications with Flash programmers, Adobe yesterday published a Flash Player road map that promises many improvements this year, with versions code-named Cyril and Dolores. Then the document adds, “We are also modernizing the Flash Player code base in order to ensure that the Flash runtimes meet the needs of developers over the next 5 to 10 years.”

“Runtime” refers to the software foundation that executes programs written in Flash’s ActionScript language. Flash Player is a browser plug-in that runs those programs on Web pages, but the same foundation built into Adobe’s AIR software accommodates standalone programs, too.

That runtime has had a long run. In its heyday, Flash had a lot to offer. It eased cross-platform programming, spanning many browsers so programmers didn’t have to worry about their differences. And it popularized features such as streaming video, vector graphics, Webcam and microphone support that were immature or missing from browsers.

Now, though, two of its core markets — gaming and premium video — are the only areas where Adobe is pushing Flash hard now. That narrowed scope arrived last year as Adobe redirected Flash work toward competing Web standards such as Hypertext Markup Language, Cascading Style Sheets, and JavaScript programming.

Balancing act
As Adobe expands beyond Flash, it’s become active in standards development, begun adding products such as Edge and Muse that cater to Web programmers and designers, and acquired PhoneGap and TypeKit for a better collection of in-house technology.

It’s a tough balancing act for Adobe. The more territory the company cedes to other programming methods, the less cross-platform leverage Flash programmers get.

Mobile apps for iOS and
Android can be packaged with AIR, and Web apps often can’t match the abilities of Flash apps and native apps. But Flash already has overstayed its welcome for many developers, and scaling back its future scope could well accelerate programmer defections.

Here’s Adobe’s current view of the balance between Flash and Web standards, according to the road map:

Increasingly, rich motion graphics will be deployed directly via the browser using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and other modern Web technologies. While the primary role of Flash Player on the Web remains the same, what it is used for will change.

Adobe believes that the Flash runtimes are particularly and uniquely suited for two primary use cases: creating and deploying rich, expressive games with console-quality graphics and deploying premium video.

A big part of the future Flash investments will come with an overhaul of its programming language, ActionScript, which is based on the EcmaScript standard that also underlies the Web’s JavaScript.

Language changes
Big changes coming with ActionScript “Next” govern how it will handle variables — specifically, a shift toward the more formal “typing” direction that requires programmers to declare whether a variable is an integer, floating-point number, or other specific types of data. Typed variables are more of a hassle for programmers, but they enable programming tools to produce faster software.

It’s not clear just how far Adobe will go, especially since it’s evidently weighing the merits of strict typing requirements versus type inference, in which Flash would have the job of making its best guess and optimizing software from there. Either way, it’s potentially a big change for programmers, though Adobe promises it shouldn’t be as disruptive as past ActionScript changes.

Adobe also announced in the road map that it’s scrapping Flash Player for Linux when using the NPAPI (Netscape Plug-in Application Programming Interface) mechanism. Flash will still be available through Chrome for Linux, which uses the Pepper API that Google developed.

Adobe’s change means, for example, that
Firefox on Linux, which supports only NPAPI, won’t be able to use the Flash Player plug-in. Adobe ditched AIR for Linux last year. Flash Player using NPAPI will be available on Windows and
Mac OS X.

Adobe released the road map in part because the company wanted to do a better job handling developers who’ve been whiplashed by recent Flash changes.

“We understand that we have damaged our trust and credibility with the community over how we have communicated some of the recent changes around the Flash platform and that trying to regain that trust is a long term process,” said Flash evangelist Mike Chambers in a blog post yesterday. “We have to be clear and open around our plans around the Flash runtimes, and then demonstrate that we can follow up those plans with actions.”

New Flash versions
Adobe has a long list of features for Flash Player 11.2, due this quarter, for Cyril, due in the second quarter, and for Dolores, due in the second half of 2012.

Here’s the list of features for Flash Player 11.2:

• Mouse-lock support

• Right and middle mouse-click support

• Context menu disabling

• Hardware-accelerated graphics/Stage 3D support for Apple iOS and Android via Adobe AIR

• Support for more hardware accelerated video cards (from January 2008) in order to expand availability of hardware-accelerated content.

• New Throttle event API (dispatches event when Flash Player throttles, pauses, or resumes content)

• Multithreaded video decoding pipeline on the desktop which improves overall performance of video on all desktop platforms

Here’s the plan for Cyril:

• Keyboard input support in full-screen mode

• Improved audio support for working with low-latency audio

• Ability to progressively stream textures for Stage 3D content

• LZMA compression support for ByteArray

• Frame label events

And here’s the plan for Dolores:

• ActionScript workers (enables concurrent ActionScript execution on separate threads)

• Support for advanced profiling

• Support for more hardware-accelerated video cards (from 2005/2006) in order to expand availability of hardware accelerated content

• Improved ActionScript performance when targeting Apple iOS

• Performance index API to inform about performance capabilities of current environment

• Release outside mouse event API

Mozilla Opens Apps Marketplace for Developer Submissions

Mozilla is opening the doors of its Marketplace to developers next week at MWC 2012.

The Mozilla Marketplace will officially open for business as of World Mobile Congress 2012 next week, but only for developers looking to submit their Web apps. But when finally launched for the general public, the store will offer free and premium apps that are based on HTML5, JavaScript, CSS and “Mozilla-proposed APIs,” enabling consumers to use them on any HTML5-enabled device and operating system.

“The Mozilla Marketplace enables developers to create and distribute applications that work across HTML5-enabled devices and operating systems (OS),” the company said in a statement. “Mozilla is advancing the Web as a platform and closing the technology gap between Web and native apps, creating new APIs and putting developers back in control of every aspect of the app experience – from easy development and distribution to direct consumer interaction.”

Naturally there are positives and negatives about HTML5-based apps. On the plus side, the “write once, deploy everywhere” nature of the HTML5 platform will significantly reduce the cost of creating, versioning and maintaining applications. For consumers, it means they don’t need to purchase a version for Android, iOS, Ubuntu, Windows and so on.

But the drawback is that most HTML5 apps are dependent on the Internet, meaning you can’t play Angry Birds or CityVille without a connection — unless it has an offline install feature, that is. And given this is a Mozilla app store, users may need to install Firefox on their device, following in the footsteps of Google and its Chrome browser-only Chrome Web Store.

So now instead of consumers choosing to purchase an app for a specific operating system and hardware set, they now must choose a specific HTML5-based internet browser. At least the choices will be narrowed down until developers discover they can milk consumers by offering limited editions for each browser (here we go again).

“The Web is the largest platform in the world. We are enabling the Web to be the marketplace, giving developers the opportunity to play on the biggest playing field imaginable,” said Todd Simpson, Mozilla’s Chief of Innovation. “By building the missing pieces, Mozilla is now unlocking the potential of the Web to be the platform for creating and consuming content everywhere.”

Mozilla didn’t elaborate on its proposed APIs, but said that they will be submitted to the W3C for standardization. The company also said the Marketplace will open its doors to consumers later this year, but didn’t specify a specific timeframe. The Mozilla Marketplace will feature apps in the categories of games, media, music, productivity and more, Mozilla said.

But it’s not giving up on Flash.

In an attempt to patch up communications with Flash programmers, Adobe yesterday published a Flash Player road map that promises many improvements this year, with versions code-named Cyril and Dolores. Then the document adds, “We are also modernizing the Flash Player code base in order to ensure that the Flash runtimes meet the needs of developers over the next 5 to 10 years.”

“Runtime” refers to the software foundation that executes programs written in Flash’s ActionScript language. Flash Player is a browser plug-in that runs those programs on Web pages, but the same foundation built into Adobe’s AIR software accommodates standalone programs, too.

That runtime has had a long run. In its heyday, Flash had a lot to offer. It eased cross-platform programming, spanning many browsers so programmers didn’t have to worry about their differences. And it popularized features such as streaming video, vector graphics, Webcam and microphone support that were immature or missing from browsers.

Now, though, two of its core markets — gaming and premium video — are the only areas where Adobe is pushing Flash hard now. That narrowed scope arrived last year as Adobe redirected Flash work toward competing Web standards such as Hypertext Markup Language, Cascading Style Sheets, and JavaScript programming.

Balancing act
As Adobe expands beyond Flash, it’s become active in standards development, begun adding products such as Edge and Muse that cater to Web programmers and designers, and acquired PhoneGap and TypeKit for a better collection of in-house technology.

It’s a tough balancing act for Adobe. The more territory the company cedes to other programming methods, the less cross-platform leverage Flash programmers get.

Android can be packaged with AIR, and Web apps often can’t match the abilities of Flash apps and native apps. But Flash already has overstayed its welcome for many developers, and scaling back its future scope could well accelerate programmer defections.

Here’s Adobe’s current view of the balance between Flash and Web standards, according to the road map:

Increasingly, rich motion graphics will be deployed directly via the browser using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and other modern Web technologies. While the primary role of Flash Player on the Web remains the same, what it is used for will change.

Adobe believes that the Flash runtimes are particularly and uniquely suited for two primary use cases: creating and deploying rich, expressive games with console-quality graphics and deploying premium video.

A big part of the future Flash investments will come with an overhaul of its programming language, ActionScript, which is based on the EcmaScript standard that also underlies the Web’s JavaScript.

Language changes
Big changes coming with ActionScript “Next” govern how it will handle variables — specifically, a shift toward the more formal “typing” direction that requires programmers to declare whether a variable is an integer, floating-point number, or other specific types of data. Typed variables are more of a hassle for programmers, but they enable programming tools to produce faster software.

It’s not clear just how far Adobe will go, especially since it’s evidently weighing the merits of strict typing requirements versus type inference, in which Flash would have the job of making its best guess and optimizing software from there. Either way, it’s potentially a big change for programmers, though Adobe promises it shouldn’t be as disruptive as past ActionScript changes.

Adobe also announced in the road map that it’s scrapping Flash Player for Linux when using the NPAPI (Netscape Plug-in Application Programming Interface) mechanism. Flash will still be available through Chrome for Linux, which uses the Pepper API that Google developed.

Adobe’s change means, for example, that
Firefox on Linux, which supports only NPAPI, won’t be able to use the Flash Player plug-in. Adobe ditched AIR for Linux last year. Flash Player using NPAPI will be available on Windows and
Mac OS X.

Adobe released the road map in part because the company wanted to do a better job handling developers who’ve been whiplashed by recent Flash changes.

“We understand that we have damaged our trust and credibility with the community over how we have communicated some of the recent changes around the Flash platform and that trying to regain that trust is a long term process,” said Flash evangelist Mike Chambers in a blog post yesterday. “We have to be clear and open around our plans around the Flash runtimes, and then demonstrate that we can follow up those plans with actions.”

• Support for advanced profiling

• Support for more hardware-accelerated video cards (from 2005/2006) in order to expand availability of hardware accelerated content
