Slain St. Pete professor remembered for caring, selfless nature

Maria Osterhoudt was passionate about her job, her faith and her family.

She taught Web design at St. Petersburg College for 11 years. She raised a son. She remained active in her church in Clearwater even after she moved 40 miles north.

She offered help to anyone who needed it.

That’s how Osterhoudt’s niece will remember her.

“She was loved by all her family,” said Delana Clark, who answered the door at her late aunt’s house Monday morning.

“I just don’t understand it,” she said. “We lost a wonderful woman. She was like a second mother to me.”

Alan Osterhoudt, 61, was arrested Saturday night after he called 911 and admitted to fatally shooting his wife, deputies said.

The couple lived at 7190 Raymond Place in Spring Hill. The suspect contacted the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 11 p.m. and told the operator he and his spouse had argued that night and his anger overtook him, according to an arrest report.

During his conversation with the operator, Osterhoudt admitted he had done “the most heinous thing he had ever done in his life,” deputies said.

Osterhoudt was in front of his house when deputies arrived and was taken into custody. He said he had placed the firearm in a drawer inside the house. Deputies entered the home and discovered the body of the 65-year-old victim in the bathroom, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said she had sustained an apparent head injury.

The suspect requested he speak to his lawyer shortly after he was arrested, deputies said.

A request to listen to Osterhoudt’s 911 call was denied because it remains part of the open investigation, said Cpl. Wendy McGinnis, a sheriff’s spokeswoman. The State Attorney’s Office could decide to release it later.

Maria Osterhoudt was a professor of Web design at St. Petersburg College in Tarpon Springs.

“Technology will not stand still and we must grow with it,” she wrote on her webpage.

Her peers said her own love of technology bled into her students and she challenged them to explore it and make it work for their benefit.

“She had creative ways to involve her students,” said Conferlete Carney, the provost at the Tarpon Springs campus.

He said the skills she taught her students easily carried over outside the classroom. She would even recruit previous students to assist her on projects – such as redesigning the college’s website or the Bilirakis Veterans Legacy Archives.

“She was a very warm and caring person,” Carney said. “She was so energetic. If you were having a rough time she would come up and put her arms around you. She lifted your spirits.”

McGinnis said her agency does not have a history with Alan Osterhoudt and neither he nor his wife appeared to have a criminal history.

Ron Williams, president of the Primrose Lane Homeowners Association, said the couple lived in the only house along Raymond Place – a small road that stretched no more than 20 yards.

Primrose Lane is a gated community nestled along the west side of U.S. 19 near Forest Oaks Boulevard.

The Osterhoudts liked their privacy and respected others’ privacy, Williams said. That didn’t mean they were unsociable. Both attended homeowners’ meetings and Maria Osterhoudt volunteered to design and publish the association’s newsletter.

“They were congenial people, particularly Maria,” said Williams. “They blended in so well with our community. There was no indication of any discontent.”

A records check revealed Alan Osterhoudt had applied for and received a concealed weapons permit in April 2005. It expired after five years and he didn’t renew it.

Clark said she learned of the shooting late Saturday night after Maria Osterhoudt’s son had called her.

She was still in a daze 36 hours later.

Clark declined to say anything about her aunt’s husband, other than she never expected him to be accused of killing her.

“It’s a tragedy for all of us,” she said.

Mozilla, Telefonica Promise Open Web Phone

Mozilla’s effort to create an open Web operating system received a major endorsement on Monday as Telefonia Digital, a Spanish broadband and telecom provider, disclosed plans to offer phones with Mozilla’s software.

Telefonica said it plans to release smartphones this year that rely on the Open Web Devices platform, a Web-based operating system that makes use of Mozilla’s HTML5-based Boot2Gecko Project. Most of the world’s smartphones today ship with Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android OS, both of which impose restrictions that affect handset makers and users.

Though Mozilla has posted a video of a hardware reference prototype running its software, the company has not disclosed which hardware maker will be shipping OWD devices. Mozilla says it is currently negotiating with several equipment manufacturers.

OWD hardware is expected to rely on a chipset from Qualcomm, which currently produces a large number of chips for Android devices.

The initiative has received the endorsement of Adobe, which has had to revised its mobile strategy to focus on HTML5 following its abandonment of Flash for mobile devices. And it appears likely to attract additional partners: Deutsche Telekom has been contributing code to Boot2Gecko, according to Mozilla.

“It has long been our mission to deliver advanced Web technologies that eliminate roadblocks for users and developers,” said Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich in a statement. “We did it first with Firefox, and now we’re doing it again in creating the first Open Web Devices. By providing the missing links, Mozilla is now unlocking the power of the Web as the platform for creating and consuming rich content everywhere.”

One of the goals of OWD is to make smartphones more affordable. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Telefonica Digital’s director of product development and innovation Carlos Domingo told CNET that he expects OWD devices to be 10 times cheaper than Apple’s iPhone, which costs $199 with a contract or $649 without one for an iPhone 4S.

It remains to be seen how OWD devices will compare with the iPhone in terms of total cost of ownership.

If OWD hardware becomes popular, it will be quite a comeback for Mozilla. The non-profit organization helped make Web-based software a viable alternative to desktop software, but it was caught unprepared as Google introduced its Chrome browser and as the major software platforms shifted their attention to mobile devices.

Mozilla’s effort to develop a mobile platform that’s free of the sometimes unwelcome oversight of a major company may be appreciated by supporters of open source software. But consumers appear to care more about free as a price point than as a principle, and Android is already pretty inexpensive for handset makers. What’s more, Mozilla’s old nemesis, Microsoft, is about to make a major push to restore its credibility in the mobile market with the next version of Windows. Add to that the lack of success of the last major Web-based operating system, webOS, and the magnitude of the challenge Mozilla faces becomes clear.

I once had a college history professor who would have us map out raw data from old archives. Though a laborious and often futile exercise, he argued that by doing so you can sometimes glean patterns from seemingly unrelated data. In addition to being a handy tool for would-be historians, the practice can be useful for spotting business trends. There have been a number of recent disclosures and initiatives that suggest tech industry leaders are pushing HTML5 for web and app development big time. Today’s blog will serve as an introduction to HTML5, and will be followed by a second post outlining the different ways the tech industry is promoting it. The third and final post will delve into the more complex questions of why tech industry leaders are embracing HTML5, and what this trend bodes for the future of app development.

WHAT IS HTML5?

HTML5 is a markup language for structuring and presenting content on the Internet. It is the fifth revision of the HTML standard (created in 1990 and standardized as HTML4 as of 1997), and includes CSS3 and a series of JavaScript APIs (Application Programming Interface; used as an interface by different software components to talk with each other).² HMTL5 is not a monolithic entity. It is a collection of features, technologies, and APIs that combine the power of the desktop with the interactivity and connectivity of the Internet.  From a programming perspective, HTML5 provides an improved markup language that supports the latest multimedia while keeping it easily readable by humans and consistently understood by computers and web browsers.¹ According to a Binvisions report released on 30 September 2011, 34 of the world’s top 100 Web sites were using HTML5 – the adoption led by search engines and social networks.

HTML 5 FOR MOBILE

The focus of the mobile world is turning to HTML5. Right now, HTML5 is positioning itself to be the No. 3 mobile platform behind Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, the two most widely-used native app platforms. In December 2011, research firm Strategy Analytics forecast sales of HTML5 compatible phones will top 1 billion in 2013.² HTML5 is appealing to developers and businesses because it can be used to build Web apps that target all mobile platforms at once.

According to a recent study by financial researchers Bernstein Research, HTML5’s web-based apps are more cost-effective and less labor-intensive than building different native apps for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. HTML5 is also good for developers, as they can avoid the 30 percent commission charged by Apple and Google for selling apps through their app stores. In addition, Apple also takes a 30 percent cut on subscriptions sold through the App Store. These cuts could be mitigated with HTML5-based apps. Amazon and Twitter both are offering Web apps. Executives from Apple, Microsoft, Google and Facebook have all praised HTML5, Bernstein Research noted.³

HTML5 apps are not without their disadvantages. Speed concerns (especially critical for gaming apps), security risks and web browser compatibility have all been cited as issues that need improvement before web-based apps can overcome their native counterparts.

Growing pains aside, the move toward HTML5 is unmistakable. In my next blog, I will explore this trend in greater detail by reviewing evidence of growing tech industry support for HTML5 in six broad areas: gaming, digital media and analytics, monetization, social media, web browsers, and search. In the third and final blog of this series I will analyze the motivations behind this industry shift to HTML5, and what conclusions, if any, can be drawn regarding the future of app development.

Microsoft Thailand developer support manager Sanguan Thannarojsakul said that it is expected HTML5 will become the new standard for Web development that will open many doors for developers with HTML5 skills. There are a few Web developers with HTML5 skills in Thailand, however, there could be a shortage of Web developers with these skills.

“This campaign is mainly aimed at encouraging awareness and allowing Web developers in Thailand to become familiar with HTML5, which is fast becoming the preferred language of the Web because it is most compatible across a wide range of applications and devices. We hope to bring awareness of the advanced capability of HTML5 through this competition,” said Sanguan.

HTML5 enables users to access websites through all Web browsers on any devices, with a responsive Web design feature that adjusts the website to fit any screen size. HTML5′s ability is to allow Web browsers to handle both video and audio without plug-ins, and make it a must for certain Web applications.

He said the campaign has been launched since January this year and more than 300 Web developers are participating.

“We really hope to encourage more Web developers in Thailand to have HTML5 skills. Currently, we have about 20,000 to 30,000 local software developers who are partners and less than 10 per cent of them are aware of or have the skills for HTML5,” said Sanguan.

He said that apart from encouraging Web developers to become aware of the new standard of Web development, this campaign also aims to promote tourism in Thailand, especially in provinces which were flooded last year.

In Thailand, there are a few websites that have been developed with HTML5 standard. Pantip.com, the popular Web-board in Thailand, plans to launch its new Web architecture developed by HTML5 called Pantip’s 3G.

Pantip.com product manager Apisilp Trunganont, who is a judge of the competition, said that Pantip.com is considered to be Thailand’s first website to be powered by HTML5 technology. Users can look forward to the ultimate Pantip.com experience when the upgraded website is launched in July this year.

“Currently, consumers prefer to access Web anywhere, anytime, and through any devices. HTML5 will allow Web users to have a good experience of Web usage across various devices and platforms,” Apisilp said.

Upcoming activities of the competition include a trip to Ayutthaya province to capture Thailand’s magnificence in photographs. The competition will run up to March 30. Those who are interested in participating in the Web development contest can visit http://html5Thailand.com.

Facebook pushes HTML5 and mobile payments forward

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012, Facebook today addressed three challenge areas that make it hard for developers to build on the mobile web: app discovery, browser fragmentation, and payments. The company says it sees more people accessing Facebook on the mobile web than from all of its top native apps combined, so the social networking giant has realized it needs to help you, the developer, build apps for the mobile web.

First, let’s talk app discovery. Earlier this month, the company revealed Facebook Platform sends more than 60 million visitors every month to apps and games. That’s not bad for 425 million monthly active mobile users, only some of which have smartphones. Facebook has been helping users discover iOS and mobile web apps since October 2011, and today the company has announced it will soon extend this to native Android apps.

Secondly, Facebook announced industry-wide initiatives to address two problems that it cannot fix by itself: mobile browser fragmentation and mobile payments. The company is aiming to make it easier to understand your app’s potential reach and to help prioritize which browser capabilities are important to you, as well as make it easier for users worldwide to purchase apps on their device via operator billing.

Facebook today announced it is joining over 30 device manufacturers, carriers, and developers that are accelerating the improvement and standardization of mobile browsers: the W3C Mobile Web Platform Core Community Group. Companies in the group include: 1Samsung, HTC, Sony Mobile Communications, Nokia, Huawei, ZTE, TCL Communication, ATT, Verizon, Vodafone, Orange, Telefónica, KDDI, SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp., Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc., NVIDIA, ST-Ericsson, Intel Corporation, Texas Instruments, Broadcom, Mozilla, Opera, Microsoft, Adobe, Netflix, VEVO, Zynga, @WalmartLabs, Electronic Arts, Sencha, and Bocoup.

Facebook today also released Ringmark, a new mobile browser test suite, and is donating it to the Community Group to build upon. Developed with open web technology company Bocoup, the test suite helps you understand which mobile browsers support the functionality your app needs.

Last but not least, Facebook today revealed it is working with operators around the world to minimize the number of steps needed to complete a transaction in mobile web apps (see the Bango partnership from earlier this month). This will be automatically enabled where carriers support it when you integrate the Pay Dialog into your app. The following operators are working on streamlined billing: ATT, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, KDDI, and SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp.

“We’re excited to be working together with you – and all of our partners around the mobile industry – to make the mobile web a strong platform,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “Our hope is that these initiatives – the Open Graph, the Core Mobile Web Platform Community Group at the W3C, and our partnerships with carriers to improve mobile payments – will enable developers all over the world to build mobile experiences that improve the lives of billions of people.”

Along with partners, the company has formed a new community group at the W3C called Core Mobile Web platform, CTO Bret Taylor said at a session of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday. For payments, Facebook has partnered with major carriers to create a one-step payment system for carrier billing. The two initiatives are aimed at solving developers’ complaints about the mobile Web, he said.

“There’s rampant technology fragmentation across mobile browsers, so developers don’t know which parts of HTML5 they can use to deliver their app to customers,” Taylor said. There also is no easy payment system with stored customer credentials for the mobile Web as there is in native platforms such as Apple iOS and Google Android, he said.

HTML5 is promoted as a single standard, but it comes in different versions for every mobile device, Taylor said. Issues such as hardware acceleration, digital rights management and access to the phone’s camera are implemented inconsistently. That makes it hard for developers to write software that works on many different phone platforms, and to reach a wide audience, he said.

Facebook started talking with Samsung about the problem last year and then expanded the discussions, Taylor said. Its partners now include mobile operators, browser vendors, device makers, and software tool makers. The W3C group will also prioritize features that matter most to developers. That will help bring the right kinds of apps to Facebook as technology evolves in the coming years, he said.

To check how closely mobile browsers follow the standards to be developed, Facebook introduced a test suite called RingMark. The company plans to contribute RingMark back to the W3C group, Taylor said. The suite includes hundreds of tests for features such as WebGL support, he said.

“As a developer, if the phone your customer’s using passes the RingMark test suite, you know your app will work for that customer,” Taylor said.

Facebook’s mobile payment plan is aimed at reducing mobile buying down to a single step to confirm a payment, improving the experiences of both developers and consumers. It’s intended to eliminate SMS device verification, a commonly used system that requires a user to receive a code via Short Messaging System and then enter it manually to complete a purchase. This has been required for many purchases, such as buying items within a mobile game, he said.

“We think this experience can be as good or even better than the native platforms,” Taylor said. “By having a great developer experience around billing we’ll be unlocking the business potential of the mobile Web.”

Facebook will introduce an SDK (software development kit) that will let developers reach consumers around the world with simple technical integration, Taylor said.

The mobile initiatives are needed because so much Facebook use now takes place on mobile devices. It’s now available on more than 2500 different mobile devices, including feature phones as well as smartphones, he said.

“Fundamentally, Facebook is a mobile product,” Taylor said. He called it the most natural form of the platform, and the one that founder Mark Zuckerberg would have created originally if the technology had been available at the time.

Google Chrome: Still a Strong All-Around Browser

Chrome’s minimalist design isn’t eye-catching, but its lean toolbar leaves more room for viewing Web pages. And what Chrome lacks in flashiness, it more than makes up for in performance. Google’s browser really shone in our JavaScript test, leaving its competitors in the dust. JavaScript is used in many popular websites–Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, etc.–because it makes those sites more immediately responsive and those JavaScript heavy pages will perform better in Chrome. The browser also performed admirably in our speed test, fully loading an image-heavy page in just over five seconds.

Along with impressive performance, Google’s browser has some other useful tricks up its sleeve. For starters, tabs are run as separate processes so that if one crashes, it doesn’t take the entire browser down with it. If your wanderings take you to a foreign language Web site, Chrome will recognize the language and offer to translate it for you in a matter of seconds. The translations, which are powered by Google Translate, are not always completely accurate–but they can be helpful in giving you a basic idea on what the page is about. Chrome is one of the most secure browsers on this list because it is sandboxed: The plug-ins Chrome uses are limited to accessing information only within the browser itself and cannot read information from other areas on your computer. Sandboxing allows Chrome to prevent malware that uses plug-in exploits from spreading through your PC.

Mobile users will be glad to know that if you own an Android phone or tablet running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), you can sync your Chrome bookmarks and web history to your mobile devices.

You can customize Chrome with web apps, themes, and extensions to fit your preferences. Chrome has a built-in web store that makes it easy to search for and install add-ons to the browser. Add-ons range from simple things, like an Evernote plug-in, all the way up to full games like Angry Birds or Bastion. And, unlike in Firefox, you don’t need to restart your browser every time you install a new extension or app.

Still, Chrome lacks an integrated RSS reader, so you’ll need to come up with your own solution if you subscribe to multiple RSS feeds.

Opera Sings New Song for Android, Apple

Browser maker Opera, which has only a small fraction of the market but is trying to boost its position in the mobile area through innovation, has released new versions of it mobile app for the Android, Symbian and iOS platforms.

Opera has been ambitious in a crowded industry. Last December, it purchased two mobile advertising companies, Mobile Theory and 4th Screen Advertising, to improve its position in the U.S. and European mobile advertising markets.

Since its arrival on the browser scene in 1994, Opera has introduced innovations that browser users take for granted today, such as tabs, the integrated search bar and pop-up blocking. It also introduced server-side web page compression, a controversial feature later incorporated into Silk, the web browser found on the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Many of the improvements in Opera Mobile 12 for Android and Symbian are the kind of “under the hood” improvements that don’t spark technolust in consumers. But they are still worth a peek.

A new HTML5 parser has been added to Mobile 12. With it, the browser will support web apps and improve the browser’s compatibility.

Mobile 12 also supports the latest version of JavaScript based on EMCAScript 5.1.

In addition, the browser supports orientation. When you move a device, the browser responds to the change in spatial position, as when you change from portrait to landscape mode.

It also supports CSS3 radial gradients, which should improve how some web pages look in the browser, and cross-origin resource sharing, which should better the performance of some apps.

Improvements found only by the Android version of the browser are the addition of WebGL, for support of 3D in the software, and the ability to use a phone’s camera from within the browser.

Opera’s browser for Apple mobile products, Mini 7, also received some performance enhancements. The company claims it’s six times faster than previous versions and performs especially well when connecting to slower, crowded networks.

In addition, Mini 7 can compress 90 percent of its data traffic, which contributes to its perky performance.

Opera has also added to Mini 7 “Speed Dial.” It’s like the buttons on a car radio, but instead of jumping to your favorite radio stations, it lets you jump to your favorite bookmarks.

Visual tabs have been added to the Mini 7, too, as well as a feature for syncing speed dial settings and bookmarks with Opera on the desktop or other devices.

Opera Mobile 12 is available from the Android Market and Apple App store. As Apple does with third-party browsers offered by its app store, Mini 7 comes with a warning that you must be at least 17 years old to download the app.

HTML5 still taking shape

The term “rich Internet applications” is an old one, coined when Adobe Systems released its Flash technology as a way to define applications that are highly interactive and connected.

Today, there is little doubt the industry has embraced HTML5 as the best solution for cross-browser, cross-device rich application development and delivery. Witness the demise of Flex, the repositioning of Flash, and Microsoft’s announcement that Silverlight 5 would be the last version for the browser.

And now that HTML5 has risen to mainstream acceptance, the industry is seeing what Telerik’s Todd Anglin called “an unusual alignment of technology heavyweights around a common platform,” citing the contributions of Adobe, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft, among others, toward the common platform.

“This is unprecedented in our industry,” he said. “Each has wanted to build and own the platform, but with the explosion of devices on the market, now they want to own the tooling services.”

_Can this all be traced to Apple’s decision to not allow runtimes in applications on its iPhone? Partly. But it’s also due to the number of new devices coming on to the market, each with different operating systems. “Plug-ins simply can’t keep up with the rapid explosion of all these devices,” Anglin said. “Even if they were allowed to, they couldn’t keep up.”

Jacobs cited a study that declared that 2.1 billion mobile phones with browsers will be in circulation two years from now, and those browsers all claim to support HTML5 development.

But it’s way too soon to declare HTML5 the Web application winner, the experts claim. According to the website builtwith.com, only 8% of the top 100,000 websites have any HTML5 behind them, and only 14% of the top 10,000 sites have anything from HTML5—even if just a Canvas pack. Further, only 46% of Internet users today have an HTML5-compatible browser.

The trouble, according to Anthony Franco, president and cofounder of software development firm EffectiveUI, is that HTML5 is not yet a standard. “Just because someone says their browser supports HTML5 doesn’t mean it’s a standard. All browsers support the W3C recommendation [for HTML5] in a different way,” he said.
 
And because HTML5 is not uniformly supported, compatibility issues come into play. This, Franco said, creates “an exception-coded nightmare.”

(As an aside, Franco said he declared the term “rich Internet application” dead two years ago. “Let’s break down the term. ‘Rich’ means well thought-through from a user perspective. ‘Internet’ means connected. ‘Application’ is software. All software should be well thought-through from a user perspective and connected. All the things we create and design by default are well thought-through from a user perspective and connected.”)
