The Tumblrification of WordPress.com Continues

WordPress users have loads of options at our disposal for getting content up fast. But now, according to a blog post, WordPress.com users have a couple more tools at their disposal – New Post and Publish buttons right on the toolbar:

Clicking the button will give you a choice of what type of content (text, photo, video, quote or link) that you’d like to share. You can add tags, write a full post or do anything as you normally would if you want, but you’ll need to go into the Posts All Posts menu and start from there. This feature is intended for quick, one-off postings.

slider 520x166 The Tumblrification of WordPress.com Continues

With the addition, it seems that WordPress is aiming squarely at the Tumblr market once again. You might remember back in September when the site implemented a Follow button for all hosted blogs. Of course, the “Reblog” option has been in place since 2010. With Tumblr serving over 15 billion page views each month, WordPress has its work cut out for it and adding similar features might very well be the way to keep those eyeballs coming back.

It’s a neat addition to WordPress.com, and we hope that we’ll see it come out on self-hosted WordPress installations, as well. Will it be able to capture the attention of Tumblr’s addicted masses? Only time will tell.

Middle Township wins another tight game

They also know how to play in close games.

Middle Township used a circus shot by junior guard Tom Catanoso and some clutch defense in the final minute to emerge with a 45-42 victory over Medford Tech on Thursday in the South Jersey Group 2 quarterfinals.

The No. 6 seed, Middle Township (18-10) advances to face the Willingboro-Bridgeton winner in Saturday’s semifinals.

“Credit our league,” Feraco said of the Cape-Atlantic. “I think 20 of our 28 games have been decided in the final minute.”

Catanoso led Middle Township with 16 points, converting a three-point play to give the Panthers a 44-42 lead with 41 seconds remaining in the game.

On the play, Catanoso drove the lane, drew a foul, and threw up a blind shot that rattled around the rim and fell through.

“He’s a clutch player,” Feraco said.

A junior-heavy team, Middle Township also received strong work from seniors Jeff Barber (six points, six rebounds) and Clarence Allen (eight rebounds, four steals).

The 6-foot Allen also guarded Medford Tech 6-6 senior center Kennedy Chukwuocha, who scored all nine of his points in the second half.

“I was just trying to make him work hard,” Allen said.

Elijah Cain scored 18 for third-seeded Medford Tech (21-8). Cain’s steal and layup gave Medford Tech a 42-41 lead just moments before Catanoso’s three-point play.

The Jaguars had a couple of chances to tie or take the lead in the final seconds but couldn’t convert.

The tense game featured eight lead changes in the fourth quarter.

Middle Township, the defending sectional champion, is used to playing tight games as a lower seed. The Panthers reached the championship game of the Cape-Atlantic League tournament last week as the No. 6 seed.

“We know how to finish tight games,” Allen said.

Middle Township   12 8 8 17 – 45

Medford Tech   11 8 8 15 – 42

Middle: Jeff Barber 7, Darrell Shelton 12, Tom Feraco 5, Tom Catanoso 16, Clarence Allen 2, Jacob Cowan 3.

Medford: Khris Shands 3, Myles Powell 10, Donte Ali 2, Elijah Cain 18, Kennedy Chukwuocha 9.

‘Project X’ has the earmarks of a commercial success

LAST WEEK, critics worried that “Act of Valor” might be a Navy recruitment video, luring young people into a life of (gasp!) military service.

Not to worry. After that one-week blip, Hollywood is back to business as usual, pandering to a young male demo with a movie that celebrates self-indulgence, status-seeking, substance abuse, vulgarity and the headlong quest for “fine bitches,” preferably drunk ones.

It’s called “Project X” and has all the earmarks of a commercial success.

Right down to the apparently inexhaustible “found footage” premise – three high school boys hire a videographer to record events surrounding the 18th birthday of Thomas Kub (Thomas Mann), organized by his blowhard friend and self-appointed impressario Costa (Oliver Cooper).

Thomas is meek and has a low social profile. His parents leave him alone for the weekend because they don’t think he’s popular enough to host a truly damaging house party. His dad thinks this makes him a “loser,” and confidently leaves the boy in charge of his Mercedes (everybody in the movie is rich).

Costa works industriously to recuit a large crowd, employing the tools of the World Wide Web, and of course the party grows to immense, chaotic dimensions.

There is booty-shaking, pill-popping, skinny-dipping, naked moon-bouncing, groping and puking. People blow pot smoke into the nose of the pet dog.

Tsk, tsk!

“Project X” exists to produce harumphs of disapproval, the very response that will give its target-audience legitimacy. And yet the movie is in its own way restrained. The filmmakers do a shrewd job of keeping the party just this side of ridiculous, so the movie does not descend into tiresome “Porky’s” style farce, with the exception of Costa, a loudmouth in a Lacoste sweater vest, the kind of suburban privileged kid who says “dawg” a lot. A little of him goes a long way.

The bacchanal is produced by “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips, and the shorthand for “X” is that it’s a “Hangover” for high school kids.

The genius of “The Hangover,” however, was in the way it kept the decadence off-camera. The movie was about the punishing consequences of indulgence, and resonated with audiences suffering a hangover from one of the biggest binges in U.S. history.

“Project X” depicts bad behavior compulsively, and ends weakly. It’s almost consequence-free. Still, underneath its celebrated Act of Squalor, we get the clear message that an unsupervised house party can become a beast that feeds itself.

Kids, don’t try this at home.

Why ambitious developers need more than just HTML5

The battle rages among developers as to what works best — native apps or HTML 5. Here’s the bet Yahoo is making.

Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Bruno Fernandez-Ruiz, whose bio is below. CNET invited him to write about Yahoo’s new approach to mobile development.

The much-hyped HTML5 Web standard is often positioned as the alternative to native application development. However, the reality is that WC3′s HTML5 alone is not enough at this pivotal time in Web history. Which is why at Yahoo we’re determined to return to our tech-first roots and help the Web evolve by pioneering the next application platform.

And guess what? It’s more than HTML5.

We believe the answer is a combination, or “cocktail” if you will, of technologies, including HTTP, HTML5, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript, which lets publishers and developers build one visually rich app, and reuse the same code to reach several devices with consistent experiences. We understand the critical importance of reaching Yahoo’s 700 million users on all connected devices, and we’re making a significant bet that the Web is the right platform to accomplish this.

When David Filo and Jerry Yang started a simple, static content website in 1994, they of course had no idea that 18 years later users would be consuming interactive, immersive applications on touch-based
tablet devices, like Yahoo Livestand for
iPad.

Today, this switch from a site-centric Web to an app-centric Web is forcing developers to rethink the technologies they use, and it’s sparking a debate about whether Web apps can really compete with native apps.

Developers focused on creating the best possible user experience are attracted to the performance and usability advantages of native development – in particular the finer memory management control it offers, as well as its ability to access a device’s camera, address book, etc.

Unfortunately, developing on several native platforms at once is costly and time-consuming, and the market is so fragmented that most developers can’t justify limiting themselves to a single platform. Apple iOS and Google
Android combined represent fewer than 500 million of the two billion connected users on the Internet, according to the companies’ own sales and activation metrics. Therefore, being locked into only one of these non-interoperable ecosystems is a dangerous short-term revenue trade-off that ultimately handicaps growth handicap for any developer.

With 1.2 billion people already connecting to the Internet on mobile devices, according to the International Telecommunications Union, and with more users switching from PCs to touch-based tablets like Apple’s iPad, it is critical for developers to find efficient ways to reach both high and low-end mobile devices. As an industry, we need to start bringing content experiences simultaneously to all connected devices, at a speed and quality that consumers expect.

How do we make this happen?

HTML5 is not a solution by itself, but it is the beginning of a solution. HTML5 provides a useful set of new standard application programming interfaces, but it’s not enough to turn the Web into a viable ecosystem that can compete with native device application development. For the Web to regain its dominance and become the next application platform, we need to improve app programming tools, make sure Web apps can run across all devices and operating systems, enable their distribution via closed app stores, speed up their performance, ensure they work even in unreliable or slow networks across the globe, and toughen up security.

Yahoo Cocktails (click to enlarge)

(Credit:
Yahoo)

With the evolution of web technologies as our guiding principle, Yahoo developed a Web application development platform called Yahoo Cocktails to tackle these challenges. Our platform combines basic ingredients that exist on the Web already, including HTTP and HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for formatting and animation effects, and JavaScript for more sophisticated programming (both on a Web server and on individual devices). Yahoo Cocktails overcomes five big shortcomings of native-only or HTML5-only development:

• Security: HTML and JavaScript, the programming languages of the Web, were not designed to run code from multiple application developers in the same page or frame, which has given rise to a typical Web vulnerability known as cross-site scripting. Yahoo has tackled this problem with the widely-used Yahoo User Interface Library (YUI), which provides isolation between application modules. In addition, we are working towards a more comprehensive solution with the Ecma standards technical committee in charge of standardizing JavaScript.

•Distribution: With well over 500,000 applications in Apple’s iTunes App Store, and soaring iPhone and iPad sales, we know that users are happy to consume and pay for applications. But, a challenge for developers is that Web applications distributed as native applications in an app store model require a “chrome” that wraps the HTML5 web application so it doesn’t run within the standard visible browser. Apache’s PhoneGap and Yahoo’s Livestand make it easy for developers to add this native chrome and to access native device APIs – such as the device’s camera – from the Web application.

•Packaging: Yahoo’s Livestand provides the necessary granularity, modularity and compose-ability capabilities needed for packaging Web modules into large Web applications, otherwise completely missing from the HTML5 standard.

•Performance: Many HTML5-based applications in the Apple and Android app stores don’t perform or feel as “silky” as pure native applications, because they can’t access hardware-based graphics acceleration. Thankfully, the CSS presentational language is helping to address this in its third version, known as CSS3, which gives developers access to 2D and 3D graphics. Platforms such as Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are implementing hardware-accelerated CSS3 for native-like performance.

• Reach and accessibility: Not all connected devices have hardware-based graphic acceleration or powerful CPUs, and mobile networks lack the reliability and performance of broadband. Yahoo’s approach is to put content at the center by allowing devices to receive and show content to the user gradually as their capabilities allow. This helps minimize the annoying “hang time” users often experience when they have slow devices or connections. We do this with a piece of the Yahoo Cocktails stack, called Mojito, which lets developers create a content-centric experience on the server and progressively enhance the experience on the device by leveraging JavaScript and Node.JS so the same code is effectively running at both ends of the Internet connection.

Cocktails aims to help shape how people will use the Internet in the next decade, especially with connected devices. Because we recognize the danger in this technology becoming proprietary, we will be making our first Cocktail, Mojito, open source within a few weeks, to evolve the web into an open platform for application development. We encourage developers to download the Mojito code from GitHub or from developer.yahoo.com and provide us with their feedback.

SEO Benefits of Responsive Web Design

Site owners have many competing needs when developing mobile sites. Different devices, different capabilities, different screen sizes and resolutions, all have an impact on designing and developing mobile sites today.

According to Mongoose Metrics, a tracking and analysis firm, only 9 percent of sites are ready for mobile in 2012. The primary consideration with mobile tends to be enabling better usability and — for ecommece sites — conversion. Another study by Compuware, a software and services provider, shows that 57 percent of users will not recommend a company with a bad mobile site and 40 percent of users will visit a competitor’s site rather than using a poorly optimized mobile site. The case for usability and conversion as primary concerns in the drive to take ecommerce sites mobile is easy to make. Fortunately, responsive web design — the leading solution to the mobile usability challenge — is also beneficial to search engine optimization.

Enlarge This Image

What Is Responsive Web Design?

Responsive web design is a concept that blends CSS, CSS3 and JavaScript to create fluid site designs that can expand, contract, rearrange or remove content based upon the user’s screen size. Instead of developing different sites for devices with different screen sizes and capabilities, one site with one set of pages reacts flexibly to display optimally on everything from a 27-inch desktop monitor to a three and a half-inch iPhone display. The usability benefits are obvious: Customers can interact with a site regardless of the device they’re using instead of having to choose between viewing the whole page illegibly or one small part of it that’s disorienting. Where usability improves, decrease bounce rates and increased conversions are usually not far behind.

True, there are cases where the function and content of the mobile site needs to be different than the desktop site. Responsive design can handle those instances also via CSS by removing or reducing the visibility of content that’s less relevant to mobile users. In some cases only a mobile app will really meet the needs of mobile users. But this article is about neither mobile apps nor the technical details of implementing responsive web design. For an excellent technical overview and references to other resources, see Smashing Magazine’s “Responsive Web Design: What It Is and How to Use It.”

Responsive Web Design Benefits SEO

Fortunately, search engine optimization offers another great reason to consider responsive web design: links. The alternative to developing a single responsive site that meets all device needs is to develop multiple sites to meet individual device needs. One site for desktop browsers, one for smartphone browsers, one for tablets, and each has to be maintained separately after the expense of designing and developing them separately. From a search engine perspective, each needs links and/or user agent-specific redirects to get customers to the right version of the site. One site means one set of links to build, and no annoying redirects to add to server load, site speed and maintenance hassles.

Think of it this way, Groupon has developed Touch.groupon.com for smartphones, Ipad.groupon.com for the iPad, and www.groupon.com for desktop computers. The search engines don’t have much interest in figuring out which sites should receive searches on which devices, though they easily could with their ability to crawl sites as different browser types. The point is that the onus is on the site to redirect the customers to the site that meet their device’s needs. For more on this, see “How to Benefit from Googlebot Mobile’s New Smarts,” my recent article on that topic.

Most ecommerce sites I’ve visited do a terrible job of redirecting customers to a mobile version of a site — if they even have a mobile site in the first place. Even my poster child for mobile success, Amazon.com, uses different sites for different devices and redirects, instead of responsive design. In their case, however, it’s hard to argue for a change when they’re running on all cylinders with their current solution.

Do Links Matter for Mobile Sites?

So back to links. If a site has to physically redirect mobile users from its desktop site to its mobile site, and if smartphone and tablet sites rarely if ever rank in the search results, what do links matter for mobile sites? Excellent question. It’s not about getting more links to the mobile version so it can rank. It’s the fact that some mobile users may create links to or share pages from the mobile site, which essentially steals link equity from the desktop site.

Say a mobile version of a product page has links to it from two blogs, two Tweets, two Facebook Likes and two Google +1s. But the desktop version of that same page has links to it from 20 blogs, 20 Tweets, 20 Facebook Likes and 20 Google +1s. The mobile version of that page is almost certainly not going to rank, and it’s stealing those links and shares from the stronger desktop version of the site. If the site had been built using responsive design, the single product page would have 22 of each type of link and share instead of 20 and two to separate pages. In summary, the benefit is consolidation is link equity to a single page, enabling that single page to send stronger signals and rank better than the two separate pages could have alone.

Monkees frontman Davy Jones dead at 66

Monkees frontman Davy Jones dead at 66

The British-born star, whose TV antics with Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork drew fans but also unflattering comparisons with the Beatles, died of a heart attack in Florida Wednesday, the TMZ celebrity website said.

The singer died after being transported to Martin Hospital South in Martin County, southern Florida, near where Jones lived, said a spokesman for the hospital, Scott Samples, without providing further details.

“Mr. Jones began to complain of not feeling well and having trouble breathing,” said the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in a statement, adding that emergency services took him to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The four-piece band initially gained fame through their TV show about a band called The Monkees, created by legendary US music producer Don Kirshner.

Jones’s good looks and British charm — he was born in Manchester, England — went down well with US audiences, along with the three American group members: guitarist Nesmith, bassist Tork and drummer-singer Dolenz.

Their knockabout antics on the show — with the toe-tapping theme tune “Hey Hey, We’re the Monkees” — drew criticism that they were a rip-off of the Beatles, who had taken America by storm a few years earlier.

But the show won two Emmy awards in 1967, for best comedy director and outstanding comedy series.

It only aired for three years in the United States in the 1960s, but it was re-run elsewhere over the years and is remembered by a generation of fans, if not by current younger audiences.

Other hits included “Daydream Believer” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday.”

The band released nine albums between 1966 and 1970, after which they disbanded — but they have come back together in various combinations over the years, according to the Billboard magazine.

The star’s Monkees bandmates voiced sorrow and shock.

“His talent will be much missed; his gifts will be with us always .. Adios, to the Manchester Cowboy,” Tork wrote on his Facebook page, calling Jones “my long-time friend and fellow-adventurer.”

In an interview with CNN a mournful Dolenz recalled touring with Jones just a few months ago. “It was a huge success and the reviews were wonderful, and we left that particular tour on a huge high note.”

Fresh-faced Jones was said to be the reason that David Bowie — real name David Robert Jones — changed his name in the mid-1960s to avoid any confusion.

The US band’s producer Kirshner, once described as “The Man with the Golden Ear” for his ability to detect and promote a hit record, died in January 2011.

As well as launching the TV band, Kirshner also nurtured stars including Neil Diamond, Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka and song-writing husband and wife Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

Jones was scheduled to perform with music contemporary David Cassidy, formerly of the Partridge Family, at the Magic City Casino in Miami on April 14th, CBS reported.

Jones was born December 30, 1945, and gained early fame as a child actor in Britain with roles in different series shown on the BBC.

He is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters from previous marriages, TMZ said.

In Hollywood, flowers were laid on his star on the storied Walk of Fame stretch of sidewalk, where passing British and Australian tourists voiced surprise and sadness at the news, according to an AFP photographer.

Rolling Stone magazine published a tribute to Jones entitled: “In Memory of the Cute One,” saying he “was the grooviest of the Monkees, which makes him one of the grooviest pop stars who ever existed.

“He was the best dancer in the Monkees, the Cute One, the one with the coy English accent, the bowl-cut boy-child who shook those cherry-red maracas and always got the girl.”

“He was also the guy who stole David Bowie’s original name,” it added.

TCWH Announces Fastest WordPress Web Hosting 2012

The leading web hosting review site Top-Cheap-Web-Hosting.com announces the fastest WordPress web hosting 2012 after it’s reviewed over 100 web hosts in 2011, based on its over 5 years industry experience.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 01, 2012

The loading speed of the website doesn’t help only for satisfied user experience, but also for better ranking on all search engines. WordPress is developed by PHP and MySQL and supported by most web hosts, but only a few web hosts optimize it well. As many users complaint with the slow WordPress hosting speed, TCWH recommends the Fastest WordPress Web Hosting for readers.

WebHostingHub offers WordPress web hosting at $6.95/mo originally, but it’s performing the best of all web hosts under $10/month which we have reviewed so far. The high performance comes from WebHostingHub up-to-date powerful servers, fast connective network, and experts’ optimization.

WebHostingHub wins the competition through the following items in detail.

1) All servers housed in Category A, PCI compliant data centers.

2) All servers are DELL branded, consist of 2 Intel XEON E5600 CPUs, 32GB RAM

3) N+1 Configurations on all servers using RAID 5 with very good I/O access performance.

4) BGP4 network to prevent downtime in case of loss of hardware.

Will Boot to Gecko kill cheap Android phones?

Fancy a cheap alternative to Android? The people behind Firefox have come up with just the thing. It’s called Boot to Gecko and it’s set to give you the power of a smart phone in a seriously budget-friendly mobile — powered by HTML5.

The Boot to Gecko platform is developed by Firefox folk Mozilla, who showed it to us working on a Samsung Galaxy S2. It’s basically a back-end software platform, which phone networks can adopt and adapt by adding their own front-end interface. Cleverly, it’s based on HTML5 so it’s open to anyone to build apps just like those on the Web.

European network Telefónica — which owns O2 — is the first to put Boot to Gecko in a phone. That phone doesn’t have a proper name or release date yet, and currently labours under the title Open Web Device. But that’s a rubbish name, so I’m going to call it the Gecko Phone, because gecko is fun to say.

Boot to Gecko is designed using HTML5, the next generation of the language used to design webpages. Because HTML5 is an open standard, anyone can build apps for Gecko with standard tools, unlike for example the iPhone. The iPhone App Store is a walled garden — Apple builds a fence around its products so that only Apple-approved apps built with Apple-specified tools can get in.

That means a potentially unlimited range of potential apps — although I suspect it’ll be a long time before a Boot to Gecko becomes more than a pet project for coders and hackers, unless networks start punting some seriously cheap phones.

Fingers crossed for that. Although no prices have been confirmed, Telefónica promises the Gecko Phone will be very friendly on the wallet. If Gecko gives smart phone smarts for a feature phone fee, it could provide a serious challenge to Android’s dominance of the cheaper end of the market — and could kill Symbian completely.

The interface isn’t a revelation, as the Gecko Phone is designed to show that Boot to Gecko does everything an iPhone or Android phone does. Swipe up the lock screen to get started — like Windows Phone — and you’re confronted by a familiar-looking grid of apps, including the typical dialling and contacts, messaging, and camera apps. The interface is slick, bouncy and fast, but will vary depending on what the networks do with it.

Mozilla has opened its own app store for developers to submit HTML5 apps. And of course there’s a phone-friendly version of Firefox for browsing the Web.

To try the Gecko Phone for yourself, head to Mozilla engineer Paul Rouget’s online simulator. For more mobile phone news, keep it CNET UK. And hey, why not tell me what you think of Boot to Gecko in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Automattic Releases Open Source WordPress.com App for Windows 8

With support from Microsoft, Automattic built and released a free, open source WordPress.com app for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Open Source, Free and Windows?

Automattic, Inc. develops some of the most popular WordPress applications and plugins, including the spam-fighting Akismet plugin, Polldaddy and Gravatar. The company is also a long-time contributor to nonprofit and open source projects, such as WordPress.org and BuddyPress.

Automattic designer and creative director Matt Thomas announced the app, which is available in the Windows Store. In his blog post, Thomas explains:

We decided to focus on showcasing the best of WordPress.com for our first version of the app, and what better way to do that than with Freshly Pressed? We’ve been highlighting WordPress.com bloggers there for several years now, and all of that great content is now accessible in our app.”

Automattic released the app source code and you can follow the app development on the Windows 8 trac.

App Features

Thomas says that his company built in special features for WordPress.com users. For example, after users sign into their accounts, they can “like” and reblog posts from Freshly Pressed, a collection of bloggers, new posts and comments. Users can also follow a blog or subscribe to it in the WordPress.com reader, and reblog posts to share them on the users’ own blogs.

With the Share charm, WordPress.com app users can share content, such as a photo library image, from any app in Windows 8 to users’ own WordPress blogs.

charm.png

Thomas says that, although this is only a first version of the WordPress.com app for Windows 8, he thinks it is “… a great way of marrying the unique Metro interface in Windows 8 with the cool stuff you can do with WordPress.com.”

The WordPress.com app supports x86, x64 and ARM processors and is licensed under the GPL v2. Currently, the app is only available in English.

Syria crisis: UN demands Valerie Amos let into country

Members of the Free Syrian Army

An activist in the Syrian city of Homs has said the Free Syrian Army has left the embattled district of Baba Amr

The UN Security Council is demanding immediate access to Syria for its humanitarian chief, Valerie Amos.

Russia and China, who vetoed two previous Security Council resolutions on Syria, are also backing the call for Baroness Amos to be allowed in.

It comes as the rebel Free Syrian Army said it was withdrawing from the Baba Amr district of Homs, which has been under siege for nearly a month.

France says two French journalists trapped in Homs are now safely out.

France’s Sarkozy: “I want to thank all those who’ve contributed to this happy ending”

Reporter Edith Bouvier, 31, and photojournalist William Daniels, 34, are now in Lebanon, French President Nicolas Sarkozy told a news conference.

Ms Bouvier was badly injured in the bombardment of a makeshift media centre last week, in which two journalists were killed and another one wounded.

“I have just spoken to Edith Bouvier, who is naturally very tired, who has suffered a great deal, but who is happy to be free and will be treated soon,” he said. “I want to thank all those who contributed to this happy outcome.”

Earlier, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it and the Syrian Red Crescent had been given the green light to go to Baba Amr on Friday to deliver food and medical supplies.

Analysis

The announcement in Paris by the Syrian National Council (SNC) that it is setting up a new “military bureau” to coordinate and funnel arms and support to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) has exposed a glaring rift in opposition ranks.

SNC President Burhan Ghalioun, said that the commander of the FSA, Col Riyad al-Asaad, and Gen Mustafa al-Shaikh, who recently set up a “Supreme Military Council”, were on board the project.

But Col Asaad told al-Jazeera that he had spoken to Mr Ghalioun the night before, that they had differed, and failed to reach agreement.

He said the FSA had its own military strategy, did not want political interference, and would not coordinate with the SNC and its new military bureau.

He had earlier criticised the SNC for failing to do anything practical to help people inside Syria. But with an Arab League resolution in January now providing political cover for countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar which want to arm the opposition, it’s not clear why Col al-Asaad is rejecting the proffered largesse.

While it is very hard to assess the true strength of the FSA and the level of popular support it enjoys inside Syria, it is frequently named in slogans chanted at anti-regime demonstrations, and many activist videos posted on the internet have shown military defectors declaring their allegiance to the FSA.

Tactical withdrawal

In a statement, the council expressed its “disappointment” that Baroness Amos had not been granted authorisation to visit Syria.

The council’s 15 member countries also said in a unanimously agreed statement that they “deplore” the deteriorating situation, “in particular the growing number of affected civilians, the lack of safe access to adequate medical services, and food shortages, particularly in areas affected by fighting and violence such as Homs, Hama, Deraa, Idlib”.

“The members of the Security Council call upon the Syrian authorities to allow immediate, full and unimpeded access of humanitarian personnel to all populations in need of assistance, in accordance with international law,” the statement said.

On Wednesday, Baroness Amos, who heads the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), said she had been refused permission by the Syrian authorities to enter the country.

Russia and China vetoed earlier resolutions on Syria at the Security Council out of concern that they could lead to regime change.

The UN estimates more than 7,500 people have died in an 11-month anti-government uprising in Syria.

The Local Co-ordination Committees, a network of activists, says 33 people died on Thursday, including 21 in Homs. Their figures cannot be verified independently.

The ICRC and Syrian Red Crescent plan to bring bring food and medical supplies to Baba Amr on Friday, and will also evacuate those in need, ICRC spokeswoman Carla Haddad Mardini told the BBC.

“We fear there are many people who are seriously wounded,” she said. “We know the humanitarian situation on the ground is extremely worrying.”

How Syrian activists have become citizen journalists

Earlier on Thursday the FSA, the main armed rebel group in the country, said it was making a “tactical withdrawal” from Baba Amr.

It came after nearly a month of bombardment and the first stages of a ground offensive by Syrian government forces.

Of the 100,000 people who normally live in Baba Amr, only a few thousand remain. The FSA said 4,000 civilians had refused to leave their homes and it was withdrawing to save them from an all-out assault.

It has been snowing heavily in Homs, slowing the advance of ground troops which began their offensive on Tuesday, but also worsening conditions for civilians.

Many of those still in Baba Amr are without power and running low on basic supplies.

Meanwhile, the exile political opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) says it has formed a military bureau to co-ordinate the various armed anti-government groups.

Announcing the creation of the new bureau, SNC leader Burhan Ghalioun said the uprising had begun as a non-violent movement, but the council had to “shoulder its responsibilities in light of this new reality”.

Mr Ghalioun said the bureau would function like a defence ministry and would be staffed by soldiers from the FSA as well as civilians.

However, the head of the FSA, Col Riyad al-Asaad, has said his organisation will not co-operate with the new bureau, our correspondent says.

Timmons Group Develops HTML5-Based Mobile iPad Application for Geospatial …

iPad2 App for Geospatial Field Data Collection and Inspections

iPad Mobile Application for Geospatial Field Data Collection and Inspections

This new system gives our technicians the ability to stay in the field for 7 hours doing mosquito control instead of data entry.

Richmond, Va. (PRWEB) March 01, 2012

Timmons Group, a leader in geospatial consulting and application development, recently developed and released a field inspection and data collection mobile application for Prince William County, Virginia. The solution is tablet-enabled and allows Prince William field staff to realize significant return on investment (ROI) by using their iPad2 tablets to streamline their daily inspection workflows. Approximately one thousand stormwater management ponds needing recurring inspection are available via a GPS-enabled map interface. The application is intuitive, user-friendly and allows the field user to complete an inspection, set a recurring site visit date, and generate a reminder for the site visit on their personalized dashboard within a week of its re-inspection date.

The application bridges the gap between the office and the field by allowing citizen requests to be assigned to specific field users in real-time. It also allows users to work in an occasionally-connected or disconnected scenario where an internet connection is not available or limited. Inspection, site visit data, and associated geospatial field data (GPS’d or digitized in the field) can be saved on the tablet if an internet connection is not available. That data can be edited, deleted, or uploaded when a connection is available. The application also has an “in-office” component that allows Prince William County Department of Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control management to produce “executive reports”, graphs, charts, and real-time field summary data.

The field mobile solution is built using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3 and is hosted in the cloud. The HTML5-based solution provides Prince William County’s Department of Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control the flexibility to manage their application centrally without having to deploy to separate app stores. Field data is collected and stored in the cloud and can be downloaded, edited, and viewed in the County’s enterprise GIS at any time.

“With our old data collection system each field tech would spend about 7 hours a week doing data entry”, said Tim McGonegal M.S., Branch Chief, Department of Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control with Prince William County Public Works. “This new system gives our technicians the ability to stay in the field for 7 hours doing mosquito control instead of data entry. This not only provides better service to our County citizens, but has also increased staff morale, as our field crews prefer working outdoors instead of in the office entering data.”

Videos of the application in action are available at http://webinars.timmonsgis.com.

A look at Rex 1516

South Street West – or whatever you want to call the stretch of South west of Broad Street – seems to be the next “it” neighborhood.

You have a newly renovated Jamaican Jerk Hut, The Quick Fixx, the Baja Room, Sawatdee, Govinda’s (the quick-serve, anyway), Jet Wine Bar, Pumpkin, La.Va, Tenstone, etc.

June should see Magpie Artisan Pie Bakery Boutique, a vintage/modern 20-seater (plus 8 at the counter) at 1622 South.  The Cambridge, a bar from Hawthornes Cafe’s crew, is due to replace the Tritone at 1508 South this spring. You have the city’s second Honey’s Sit N Eat coming to 21st and South. I know of two other projects – now under wraps.

Next up – perhaps this weekend – will be Rex 1516 (1516 South St., 267-319-1366), whose husband-and-wife owners (Evan Malone and Jill Weber) own Jet Wine Bar across the street at 1525 South.

Why? “We want to invest in our neighborhood,” Weber told me.

Rex 1516 has a faded-mansion look (distressed woodwork, wrought-iron chandeliers, antique mirrors, wooden paneling along the bar from the old Rittenhouse Club), Southern-inspired cooking from Alabama transplant Regis Jansen (ex-1601), an in-house pastry chef (Shamus Moriarty, formerly of Farmers’ Cabinet), and a bar list from manager Heather Rodkey (ex-Adsum, Rouge). Incredibly straight-ahead food and drinks.

It’ll serve lunch, dinner, and late night daily.

Rock Your Launch (Get It?) With This Email-Collecting WordPress Theme

Screen Shot 2012-03-01 at 10.36.17 AM

Although I think you’re better off not hosting your hot, hot beta launch screen yourself, if you simply must have complete control there’s LaunchEffect, a WordPress theme that recreates the complex process of asking for – and storing – email addresses of wannabe beta users.

The system supports three basic functions:

You can then track the most excited folks – the folks who referred the most people – and give them a special prize like a beta account, a goldfish, or a bag of onions.

LaunchEffect is free but a premium version adds an animated countdown, a more brandable experience, and a more formal blog layout. You can check out a demo of the premium version here. The premium version costs $35 for a single-site license.

Again, some folks like to have complete control and some like to cede a little control for proven performance. Either way, it’s a fun way to build a buzz.

Yahoo spin-off joins with Microsoft for tools that could potentially grow Hadoop’s popularity by millions of users.

Hortonworks, a maker of a Hadoop distribution bearing its namesake and a provider of related support and training services, is working on a connector to link Excel with the open source Big Data processing platform. It has a high-profile ally in the effort: Microsoft.

The companies previously partnered on getting Hadoop to run on Windows Server. Microsoft, of course, brings its knowledge of the inner workings of its own software and how to interface with it. Hortonworks was spun off from Yahoo!, Hadoop’s birthplace, last year. Its founding members include key ex-Yahoo staffers, including CTO Eric Baldeschwieler, former vice president of Hadoop Software Engineering.

Now Hortonworks and Microsoft are working on a Hive ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) driver that extends data analysis capabilities to Excel. It’s a model that they expect will bring Hadoop-powered business intelligence functionality to the venerable spreadsheet software via Microsoft’s PowerPivot.

The project is part of a broader open source collaboration that involves developing a JavaScript framework that the companies hope “will enable millions of JavaScript developers to perform iterative prototyping and interactive exploration of Hadoop data.”

To accomplish that, Hortonworks is rubbing elbows with a software giant that carries a lot of clout with software developers.

Embarking on an Excel-lent Adventure?

Eric Baldeschwieler, spells out the significance of the announcement. In short, Hadoop is poised to attract many more admirers.

“There are many more millions of Excel and PowerPivot users that can also now derive value from Apache Hadoop using software is that already very familiar to them,” he writes. “Simply put, these contributions by Microsoft will extend Apache Hadoop to the most prolific data analysis tools in the world.”

Baldeschwieler also notes how the notoriously closed-source company is now a backer of an open source project that can potentially touch millions of users and developers.

“They are embracing open source and giving back in a true open source tradition. Not only are they contributing code that allows Apache Hadoop to run effectively on Windows, they are also contributing a new JavaScript framework and an enhanced Hive ODBC driver,” he states.

Ultimately, Microsoft’s involvement lends momentum to Hortonworks’ vision. The company envisions Apache Hadoop processing “half of the world’s data within the next five years (or less).”
