Norfolk State prepares for second NCAA obstacle – The Virginian

OMAHA, Neb.

Can the Norfolk State Spartans do it again, or will it end with their so-called 15 minutes of fame?

Two days after pulling perhaps the upset of this century, the Spartans now will turn their attention to the Florida Gators on Sunday when the teams tip off at 6:10 (TNT) with a spot in the NCAA men’s basketball Sweet 16 on the line.

Suffering somewhat from a spotlight hangover, the Spartans showed up Saturday at the CenturyLink Center for a practice that was closed to the media and public. It followed a media session where their 6-foot-10 center Kyle O’Quinn was besieged with questions.

Clearly a media darling after just one game of the tournament, O’Quinn continued to deftly field questions and give answers that had reporters scribbling furiously and laughing out loud.

Asked if his Twitter account had blown up in the last 24 hours, O’Quinn said he had “2,100 new Twitter followers” since Norfolk State’s shocking 86-84 victory Friday over Missouri.

O’Quinn scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Spartans became only the fifth team to pull off the No. 15-seed vs. No. 2-seed upset and the first in 11 years.

O’Quinn said that as he continued to gain followers to his Twitter account, “My team got tired of me giving them the updates.”

The team hasn’t tired of the notoriety or the uniqueness of what is happening. Playing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the Spartans just don’t operate at the same level as the collegiate heavyweights.

Schools like Missouri.

Or Florida.

While some teams take charter flights on road games, the Spartans often ride a bus, although they do occasionally fly during the regular season.

O’Quinn said there is a huge difference.

“We just went from going through the TSA line to having a tour bus drive on to the tarmac to board a charter flight,” he said.

And while many schools often have their games televised, the Spartans play in a league that holds doubleheaders involving the men’s and women’s teams.

“Here we are getting a police escort from our hotel to the arena and the police are stopping traffic for us,” coach Anthony Evans said. “You should have been on the bus to watch that. The guys were all … going absolutely crazy.”

By beating Missouri, Evans and his star player have gone from postgame interviews where one reporter and a local TV station interviewthem to national radio shows and interviews with the hosts at CBS Sports.

Now comes Florida, a been-there-done-that program that won back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007. The Gators might not have come into the tournament with the high expectations that followed Missouri, but their portfolio over the years is even richer than the Tigers’ portfolio.

Do the Spartans have anything left for Florida?

O’Quinn, a senior from Jamaica, N.Y., says they do, adding that even though he played 37 minutes Friday there is a lot of recovery that can be had from a night’s sleep and a stiff ice bath.

Besides, teammate Pendarvis Williams is certain the spotlight isn’t affecting O’Quinn like it might others.

“I was so wound up after beating Missouri that I didn’t get to sleep until about 2 a.m.,” Williams said.

“Kyle? He was snoring by then.”

Lundy is S. Jersey player of year

A junior forward who impacted the game at both ends of the court, the 6-foot-5 Lundy averaged 22.3 points and 12.7 rebounds. He was a major force at the defensive end, both as a shot blocker and at the top of Paulsboro’s trapping, 1-3-1, half-court zone.

With Lundy raising his performance in the biggest games of the season, Paulsboro became the first South Jersey team since Shawnee in 1995 to reach 30-0. The Red Raiders finished 30-1 after losing to eventual Group 1 state champion Asbury Park in the state semifinals.

“The undefeated season,” Lundy said when asked what he remembers most about his junior year. “Nobody expected it. When we got to 30-0, it was incredible. There was so much emotion because it’s so rare.”

A three-year starter, Lundy has 1,563 career points. He thought he made his biggest improvement this season as a leader.

“I never really spoke up before,” Lundy said. “I was young, and I didn’t want to say anything. I’m normally a quiet person. I don’t show a lot of emotion. But this year, I became a lot more vocal.”

Paulsboro coach Sean Collins said Lundy is “unselfish to a fault” but made major strides this season in assuming more of a leadership role.

“It’s not his nature to be loud, but he took on a much more vocal role,” Collins said. “Along with the seniors, this became his team.”

Lundy said Paulsboro’s 69-59 victory over then-No. 1 Paul VI in the Cherry Hill Invitational on Feb. 18 was a signature moment for the Red Raiders.

“We knew how good we were, but that opened a lot of people’s eyes,” Lundy said.

Lundy was an impact freshman and averaged 21.3 points as a sophomore for a Paulsboro team that reached the South Jersey Group 1 finals.

After watching Billy Slater become the greatest try-scoring fullback in “premiership history” Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy acknowledged that the boy from Innisfail was the best No.1 he has ever seen.

Slater and the other members of Melbourne‘s “big three”, Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk, provided the winning touches in the Storm’s 30-6 demolition job on Gold Coast Titans.

Slater and Kiwi winger Matt Duffie scored two tries each, with Slater taking his career tally to 130, breaking the record previously held by recently retired former Penrith and South Sydney star Rhys Wesser.

Slater’s first try on Saturday illustrated his amazing pace, with Titans fullback Will Zillman left in his wake. The second had to be seen to be believed with Slater somehow grounding the ball just before the deadball line from a Smith kick out of dummy half.

Bellamy said “Immortal” Graeme Langlands was his favourite player as a kid.

“I didn’t see Clive Churchill, I must say,” Bellamy said.

“But there was Langlands, Graham Eadie, Garry Jack, Gary Belcher, but I must say I don’t think I’ve seen a better fullback before. No I haven’t.”

Titans coach John Cartwright described Slater as “a freak”.

“He’s the best I’ve ever seen, consistently. He does it every week,” he said.

“We were worried about those three all week and we kept them at bay for about 80 percent of the game.”

Told after the game he had rewritten league history, Slater replied: “I wasn’t aware going into the game.

“It hasn’t sunk in. There have been a lot of great fullbacks over the last 100 years and now there is an environment where there are a lot of great fullbacks.

“You always try to push your limits.”

CROSSROADS:Tell them customers are not morons

Saumu Jumanne

In today’s world, business is often a cutthroat competition venture. In such a scenario, one would expect major companies in Tanzania to practise the old age maxim –‘customer is the king’.
Instead, the customer is often treated as a novice with nowhere to go and complaint, sometimes being reduced to the level of the beggar.
Very sad stories are told across East Africa about how we treat our customers in the tourism and hotel industry. When tour guides crosses over from Kenya to give tourists a treat of their life we complain.
They don’t do any magic only that they are willing to go the extra mile to make their clients happy. A casual survey in Dar es Salaam will prove that most of the top brass staff at many hotels are foreigners, who are ready to work daily for as many hours as the customers want, for no extra pay.
It is high time Tanzanian businesspeople realise that so long as we treat customers as morons, we will never create competitive business sectors. Even where you have a monopoly, the customer should remain the king for your business to be sustainable.
Dear reader, how many times have you felt mistreated as a customer – be it at a local shop, saloon, or a bank? Each one of us has a story to tell. We suffer customer mistreatment in silence.
Countless times personally, I have experienced it. Recently it was at my bank. I have been following up five months bank statement, and one would have thought I was begging for a loan.
For the third time, this month National Microfinance Bank (NMB) – Msasani Branch, I have not been able to get the document. The reasons the bank staff give me are flimsy. At first I was asked why I did not go for the document on monthly basis. Then they claimed they do not have access to last year’s database.
They could not provide even a statement for January and February this year.  I do not know if my fourth trip will yield any fruit, as I have been told to check after a week.
How could a bank staff tell me they do not have access to my account’s data for last year? I tried to enquire, and I could not get a straight answer. In such a situation what can a customer do?
I remember when I opened my account I gave the institution my details including the email address. It would have been easier to send me my monthly statement online. Is that so much to ask for the largest bank in the country in terms of branch network?
Banks are aware that the demand for banking services is larger than supply, even with the coming of the mobile cash services. No wonder they treat customers as morons. This must change in all sectors for us to move into the next level of development.
If you ask many employees where their salaries come from, few will tell it is from the customers. There would be no pay-check for you without the customers you mistreat and ignore.
For any business to provide satisfactory services, making customers happy is a recipe for business success.

Remember if the customer is happy with your services, there is a probability of bringing along others and make free adverts for you. Here I am shopping for a friendly customer-bank relationship- one willing to email me my statements, do transactions on line and all that.

Harrogate Town boss Weaver relieved with one goal win

Harrogate Town manager Simon Weaver put their 1-0 win at Eastwood down to an improved second-half performance.

Substitute Jonny Allan scored in the final minute of the game to leave Harrogate Town in 16th in the Blue Square Bet North.

Weaver told

BBC Radio York

: “We applied a lot of pressure particularly in the second half.

“Perseverance got the winner for us really. We just kept going and doing the same things.”

He added: “We changed it at half time, went to 4-4-2 and we were a handful.

“You can’t help but think it’s just not going to be our day.

“Crosses kept coming in and we were just the wrong side of the post, or over the bar or the keeper would pull off a save. It just wasn’t happening.”

Allan came on from the bench in the last 15 minutes of the game and Weaver was delighted with the impact he made.

“It was a class finish. He’s on a bit of a run,” he said.

“It’s just unfortunate for us that at the minute he can’t start games because his calf’s just not fully repaired. But he’s a character and the sort we need.

“We’ve got to start doing the basics right and doing battle with the enemy and not within ourselves.

“I always thought it would be a one goal in it match and it was.

“They dug in and they made it battle.

“When you walk across the pitch you realise it was difficult keeping the ball as much as we want to.

“That’s what we’re trying to build but sometimes you have to go back to old fashioned football and make sure you get it wide and get the balls in the box and win your challenges.”

We’re well-off, sure, but don’t call us rich

THE federal government considers an income of $150,000 wealthy enough for taxpayers to no longer receive its help.

But most people think a ”well off”’ family with two parents and two children earns about $120,000, according to research by Essential Media. They are inclined, however, to raise the bar to $159,000 before they call that same family wealthy.

The $150,000 benchmark created a headache for the federal government last year when it froze the threshold for family payments and other benefits at $150,000 instead of allowing it to rise with inflation as it used to.

Families on $150,000 were not rich, Treasurer Wayne Swan said last May, but that they were ”rich enough”, a comment that created a talkback typhoon for a day or two.

The government is more careful in its language now but it appears its line in the sand is not all that out of step with what people think. As Mr Swan was railing against the ”rising power of vested interests” such as billionaire trio Gina Rinehart, Andrew Forrest and Clive Palmer, Essential Media was conducting polling about the definition of rich.

In a survey of 1891 respondents completed earlier this month, most – 69 per cent – thought a ”middle income” for a single person is between $40,000 and $79,000 a year.

A broader income range was given for middle incomes families of two parents and two children – 69 per cent think it is between $60,000 and $119,000. Most surveyed nominate $80,000 as the starting point for middle income earners.

To be ”well off”’, a single person had to earn $69,000, said 63 per cent of respondents, and a family $120,000, according to 55 per cent.

A single person earning $120,000 is considered wealthy by 58 per cent, while the average minimum income for a family to be considered wealthy was $159,000.

The executive director of the Australia Institute, Richard Denniss, said: ”The minimum wage is around $37,000 a year. The median income is between $60,000 and $70,000. Two people earning that gives you a combined income of between $120,000 and $140,000.”

”It’s not a lot for people considering buying a $5 million waterfront mansion in Sydney but for 23 million Australians it is,” Dr Denniss said. ”If people think it’s hard to make ends meet on $150,000 a year then they should think about how they would cope if they lost their jobs for three to six months and had to live on the dole, which is about $15,000 a year.”

Asked about the Essential Media research, Mr Swan’s office pointed to his recent essay in The Monthly and his new ”fair go” slogan.

”The Gillard Labor government will continue the fight to ensure more Australians enjoy the opportunities of the Asian century and not just a fortunate few,” Mr Swan said through a spokesman.

Mills delight at reaching Wembley

York City manager Gary Mills hailed his side’s appearance in the FA Trophy final as “deserved”.

York beat Luton Town 2-1 on aggregate to reach the final at Wembley against Newport on 12 May.

Mills told

BBC Radio York

: “I’ve said from the word go I wanted to win this competition this year.

“It meant a lot to me and I know what it meant to the football club. The players have got the club through. It feels fantastic.”

Gary Mills

York drew the second leg of the semi-final at Luton 1-1 after Robbie Willmott opened the scoring for Luton just before half-time.

Matty Blair scored what proved to be the decisive goal for York in the final minute of the game.

Mills added: “I said to the players before the game today we won’t win the Trophy at Wembley. We’ll win it today.

“This was always going to be a tough semi-final for us but over the two legs I think we’ve deserved it.

“I thought we were second best for the first half today but more like ourselves in the second half.

“We missed two or three chances to get that one goal.

“The players have worked hard and now the most important thing for us is we’ve got to get to Wembley twice.”

Six Nations 2012: final dayLive

There’s no doubt that Wales have been the team of the tournament so far. It used to be that they just had to whistle down a pit for a prop, but these days they field giant young backs who look as though they were created by the special effects guys from Doctor Who, filmed just down the road from the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff Bay.

The young Welsh monsters may be the team eyeing a Grand Slam but recent history is on the side of the always unpredictable French. They won the World Cup semi-final between the two only five months’ ago, and have triumphed in seven of the past eight games between the two.

However, Wales’ last win over Les Bleus was the 29-12 defeat when Wales clinched the 2008 Grand Slam. The entire Welsh nation will hope it’s a case, as Tiger Bay’s own Shirley Bassey belted out before the turn of the Millennium, that it’s a case of history repeating later today.

When will Mr. Kent’s tulip arrive?

Video: Clement Kent’s tulips

Anticipation builds for Clement Kent, an avid Toronto tulip gardener. Over the years he estimates that he has planted thousands of bulbs in his garden and predicts that the unusually mild winter means that his tulips will flower much earlier.

Image

The dappling sunlight and the surprising warmth of an early March day settle upon Clement Kent as they settle upon his garden.

The duns and greys have already given way to washed-blue crocuses and the nodding heads of piercingly white snowdrops, while a seductively fragrant witch hazel has been in spidery golden bloom since January.

Quite fantastic, really. And, as Mr. Kent points out, fantastically odd.

The spring season has galloped ahead of itself. This would be an understatement. “We used to take breaks for winter,” sighs Mr. Kent, urging a visitor to inhale the sweet scent of the witch hazel.

There are many “used to’s” in the conversation.

As in, “We used to think of crocuses as the flower we could be sure would be open on my daughter’s birthday.”

Mr. Kent is seated near a still naked Prestonian lilac, one of the many delights in his delightful garden. At a guess, this year’s crocuses, the first of which flowered on March 1, will be spent within the week.

Mr. Kent’s daughter, Leila, turns 21 on April 2. Six months after Leila’s birth, Mr. Kent planted a quantity of tulip bulbs in celebration, choosing a sunny corner in the back garden of his west-end home as the garden plot for one type of tulip in particular.

These particular tulips bear a story. “We were living in Provence,” Mr. Kent recalls, softly nudging the jealousy quotient just a notch higher. “We had a wonderful early spring. In fact, we moved into our house on Avenue des Amandiers in January, when the almonds were blooming.”

In late April of that year — 1990 — Mr. Kent and his wife, the artist Leena Raudvee, travelled up to Holland and rented “two good Dutch bikes” and cycled through the bulb fields, great swaths of reds and purples and yellows. “When you’re bicycling it’s the perfect pace,” he says, reflecting. “The colours are all changing, but not too fast.”

The couple made the pilgrimage to Leiden, home of the Hortus Botanicus, the first botanical garden in Holland. In bloom there sat a crimson tulip, red as a cardinal’s robes, with a flush of purple spreading from the base of its waxen petals.

Mr. Kent was struck. “It was a Couleur Cardinal,” he says. “It is a lovely tulip.” And so it was that Mr. Kent would honour Leila’s birth by planting a number of Couleur Cardinals in his own garden, in the lee of what is now a gnarly and zaftig wisteria and in the company of alliums and daffodils and tiny species tulips, those delightfully spiky harbingers of spring.

There is an excitement of other tulips elsewhere in the garden — Ms. Raudvee favours the black parrot — but it is the Couleur Cardinal, an early resilient spring riser, that has Mr. Kent’s heart.

By “early” Mr. Kent means May. And here it is — March.

Mr. Kent leads a meander of his garden, speaking of honey bees (he is a researcher with Professor Amro Zayed’s bee laboratory at York University) and hellebores and clematis, and how he has made his garden over from what was once a patch of grass hosting a lone pear tree.

Up the garden path, just beyond the back porch, Mr. Kent comes upon a sweet, sheltered spot. The leaves of the Couleur Cardinal tulips have poked through the earth by a full centimeter or so. Five days later, Mr. Kent measures the tulip leaves at 9.5 centimetres.

How early will Mr. Kent’s tulip be?

Mr. Kent, curious, has been busy adapting a British “growing degree days” formula to Ontario. After what he describes as a “life and death struggle with the math” he has plotted a spreadsheet. “I am now predicting,” he informs by email, “that the tulip could be in full bloom as much as three to four weeks early, which means April 15th to 21st.”

To monitor the tulip’s progress, the Star has positioned two garden-friendly cameras in Mr. Kent’s backyard. Mr. Kent’s golden lab has been seconded to squirrel patrol. Mr. Kent watches and waits. As do we.
