The early favourite to replace David Gallop as NRL chief executive was offered the same job 10 years ago but knocked it back.

Former TAB boss Warren Wilson was approached by News Limited bosses Lachlan Murdoch and John Hartigan about the role in late 2001.

It’s understood Wilson would jump at the chance if it’s offered to him again.

Gallop

He was also targeted for the NRL’s independent commission late last year and made it to the final 14 interviews.

A former Penrith lower grade forward, Wilson was recently installed as boss of the Panthers to revive the ailing business.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

He had immediate success by slashing costs and lifting trading revenue by 48 per cent on the figures for last year.

Wilson is regarded as one of Australia’s sharpest and most dynamic administrators.

He is highly regarded within the racing industry and in other sports from relationships built while running the TAB.

Long before he joined the Panthers, Wilson tried to convince the NRL to establish policy to cash in on the sports gambling boom.

He met David Gallop and told him sports betting was worth $20 million a year to the game in new revenue.

Wilson declined to comment when asked about his availability but reliable sources have indicated he was keen on the job.

It would be on the proviso, however, that he is not restricted by the same interference from higher up that cost Gallop his job.

Taptu Expands Service to the Desktop with HTML5 App

Taptu, the social news reader for the iPhone and iPad (also known as the service “DJ-ing the news”) has expanded its service to be usable on any browser. The new HTML5 Taptu app will let users create and share their personal Taptu streams just like they can on their iOS devices.

Even if a user has Taptu on both iOS devices and wants to view it on the web, all of those streams will be synced across every device. Taptu even has plans to update the service with a mobile web app so that nearly any mobile user can be in sync with the Taptu service on nearly any device.

In an update to both the iOS, Android, and new web platforms, Taptu has added the ability for users to create a stream based on a search term. So if a user wants to keep up on “Justin Beiber” news, they can make a stream for that.

Taptu is a social news reader app that aggregates all of a users important streams (like Facebook, Twitter, RSS feeds, and more) into one, visually focused app. Like most news readers, users can save articles to read for later on their favorite services (like Instapaper and Pocket).

Taptu is a free, universal app.

Red Hat launches hybrid cloud management software

IDG News Service - After a year of testing the software in beta, Red Hat Wednesday launched its hybrid cloud management software, called CloudForms.

Most organizations interested in adopting cloud computing already have considerable IT infrastructure in place, argued Brian Stevens, Red Hat chief technology officer, in a webcast. As a result, their “focus is not how [to] start anew, but how [to] unify their existing internal resources with the elastic resources of the public cloud.”

CloudForms was designed to unify public and private cloud resources into a single system, even if the underlying clouds use different technologies. With CloudForms, applications can be moved between these clouds without the user or administrator worrying about configuration issues. It provides users with a self-service portal, and administrators with control and governance tools.

CloudForms uses application predefined blueprints to deploy an application across disparate cloud environments, explained Bryan Che, Red Hat senior director of cloud marketing. Blueprints, composed either by Red Hat or the administrator, define everything an application needs to run in a particular native environment.

“An application blueprint provides a templating language that describes how to instantiate an application in the cloud,” Che said. CloudForms maintains a catalogue of blueprints that it consults whenever an application is requested. “From a same application blueprint, you can manage the application across a diverse set of providers.”

Che showed how an instance of WordPress could be deployed across three services, each with a different underlying infrastructure: Amazon Web Services, a VMware cloud and a Red Hat cloud. Each used different hypervisors, but CloudForms used the WordPress blueprint to package the software in the appropriate image for the chosen environment.

Red Hat fashioned CloudForms from the open source Apache DeltaCloud project, a project it initiated. CloudForms runs on a software stack that includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, JBoss Enterprise Middleware and various Red Hat storage technologies.

Mozilla Close to Cracking HTML5 Mobile Hardware Integration for …

Mozilla’s quest to create an HTML5-based mobile operating system is called Boot 2 Gecko (B2G), which was unveiled as an open source project near the end of 2011. The promise behind B2G is that is will create a mobile OS that can be a platform for mobile Web apps that function just like their native counterparts on iOS and Android but are based on browser technologies. More so than any other HTML5 initiative, such as creating apps that function across platforms, the ability to be the platform and the hardware is one of the most significant development projects that developers are working on right now.

Since unveiling its roadmap, Mozilla has made significant progress. The pertinent piece in tying HTML5 to device hardware is called WebAPIs. It is aptly named: The goal is to take application programming interfaces (APIs) that have the ability to connect data from one point to functions at another point and tie them to the Web through a browser.

In this scenario, the browser becomes the platform. It needs to be able to interact with the hardware on a mobile device that controls a variety of simple functions including the telephone, vibration, accelerometer, power management, Wi-Fi, device storage, contacts, camera, NFC, BlueTooth, push notifications and more.

The ability to perform these basic functions through a mobile browser is still very much a work in progress. But developer Paul Rouget already has a working demo of WebAPIs in action. In a video post earlier this week, he showed off such fundamental capabilities including the use of an accelerometer, GPS, proximity sensors and power management.

The smartphone in that video is likely an HTC One X, the high-end Android phone running Ice Cream Sandwich, Android’s most recent iteration of its OS. Mozilla is working on two different ways of tying HTML5 to device hardware. Yes, it is trying to create a mobile operating system with B2G, but it is also working through its mobile browser, Firefox for Android (dubbed Fennec), to create a HTML5-based browser platform within Google’s smartphone OS. Almost all of the WebAPIs being developed are developed for Fennec on Android alone as well as in concert with B2G. Take a look at the documentation page for WebAPIs to see the progress of the project. Note that in the progress section, most WebAPIs are documented for both Android and B2G. (Because Mozilla doesn’t have a browser under iOS, employing this approach for the iPhone will be much trickier, and likely well off in the future; expect this approach to be Android-only for some time.)

What does Mozilla hope to accomplish by creating WebAPIs for its Firefox browser in Android? Foremost, the more powerful Firefox for Android is, the easier it will be for Mozilla to deploy dynamic Web apps quickly to a wider array of smartphone users. Boot 2 Gecko is a smart idea, and it is beginning to take shape, but it is still likely more than a year from actually coming to market with a real device. Mozilla is planning on a Web app store to deploy applications both through its desktop and mobile browsers. The mobile browser, which has its largest user base on Android, needs to be able to properly run those apps.

Mozilla’s idea is intriguing. On Android, it can become a platform within a platform. Instead of using the native Android browser or Google Chrome Beta, users will be able to download apps through Mozilla’s application store instead of Google Play. It is not exactly the “end-run around the app store” technique that many hope will be the future of HTML5 mobile Web apps, but the ability to create an app ecosystem that resides right next to the native app store would be a decent first step.

How exciting are Mozilla’s efforts on creating an HTML5 mobile operating system? With the presumed death of webOS and its Enyo-based application framework, has the hope of developers in creating a true browser-based OS on mobile passed to Mozilla? Let us know what you think.

RebelMouse Is A Pinterest-Tumblr-WordPress Mashup For Organizing Your Social …

Ex-Huffington Post tech chief Paul Berry released a beta version of his new social publishing platform, RebelMouse, this morning–and it’s attracted a press conference full of reporters so far. RebelMouse sorts and displays your social streams in a neat front-page grid, and automatically updates as you add new entries to your Twitter or Facebook profile. You can already check out the beta feeds from a handful of reporters, including Peter Kafka from AllThingsD, Om Malik of GigaOm, Jay Yarrow from Business Insider, and our own Anjali Mullany.

RebelMouse looks similar to Pinterest at first glance, but might best be compared to a WordPress or Tumblr profile since the look can be easily customized. Page owners can curate their page with selections from Twitter and Facebook, tack on stories directly from websites with a “Stick It” tool (like Pinterest), or create a new blog post as one would do with a traditional blogging platform. Basic access to the site will be free, with a $3/month upgrade option for a personal domain, and a $3/week fee for corporate pages. Further along, Berry has said, he’ll add e-commerce features to RebelMouse, letting people buy things from the profile pages they view.

To keep up with news as it happens, check in on our main Fast Feed page.

Finally, a Cross-Platform HTML5 Game

We’ve been hearing about it for years: The collection of Web technologies known as HTML5 is the future of online publishing. The promise of cross-platform applications with one easy code base is enticing to developers, who stand to save a fortune in coding costs, and publishers, who could extend their reach and leap across distribution channels. Meanwhile, skeptics keep saying, “I’ll believe that HTML5 is the answer when I see a great app built in nothing but HTML5.” Finally, it’s showtime: Boom Town, a game developed by appMobi, represents the first step toward creating dynamic mobile games built solely in HTML5.

Ludei’s CocoonJS Scores Big With HTML5 Game Developers

LOS ANGELES, CA, Jun 06, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
Today at E3 2012, the world’s premier trade show for computer and
video games and related products, Ludei announced that it will
demonstrate the latest version of its acclaimed CocoonJS mobile HTML5
and JavaScript game development platform. CocoonJS allows developers
and publishers to accelerate HTML5 game performance by over 1000% and
is rapidly becoming the must have platform for all HTML5 game
    developers.

Ludei is demonstrating its CocoonJS mobile gaming platform at E3
    Booth 2663.

CocoonJS provides game developers with an easy — and free — way to
deploy HTML5 games as native iOS and Android apps without changing
any code and, as today’s announcement illustrated, is the game
engine-agnostic platform that really works to run JavaScript HTML5
    games on mobile.

Today’s announcement contained good news for thousands of JavaScript
and HTML5 game developers eager to access the iOS and Android markets
    including:

-- ImpactJS and Construct 2 Game Engines Now Integrate with CocoonJS

Games developed using the popular game engines ImpactJS and Scirra
Construct 2 now have direct access to the CooconJS platform. Unlike
other HTML5 game platforms, only CocoonJS supports games developed
with these engines on both iOS and Android games with the hardware
accelerated canvas needed to play high performing HTML5 games.

-- First ImpactJS Game Now in the Google Play Store

Biolab Disaster, is the first game using Impact available in Google
Play, working on Android with native-like performance.

-- Mobile Multiplayer in iOS -- built in just four days

Appoint Solutions — who created “Grabbit” a mobile multiplayer game in
just four days using the CocoonJS HTML5 platform, has just released
another CocoonJS-based game, “Monster Move” in the iOS App Store.

            -- Games in Queue

More than 100 games using CocoonJS are set to launch soon in the iOS
and Android app stores, as studios like Lost Decade and Massively Fun
in addition to mid-size and big publishers, continue to flock to
Ludei to solve their HTML5 development problems.

“We are excited about the commitment of the developer community to
use HTML5 to achieve true cross compatibility and superior
native-like performance for HTML5 games,” said Eneko Knorr, founder
of Ludei. “The innovative spirit of our customers is a perfect
example of how far the HTML5 industry has come in just the past
    year.”

“The great promise of HTML5 also brings great problems — performance
and deployment being at the top of the list. Because of the
difficulty and problematic nature of mobilizing HTML5 games as native
apps, game developers and companies are eagerly using CocoonJS to
allow developers to concentrate on just building the game; the
CocoonJS platform takes care of the rest,” explained Knorr.

    About CocoonJS
CocoonJS is a technology that allows HTML5 developers
to deploy their games on mobile devices as native applications. Using
CocoonJS, the overall performance of the app is accelerated; main
issues that HTML5 mobile apps have to face are solved; and vital new
features are provided like access to monetization channels using ads
and in-app purchases, analytics, local and remote push notifications,
and more. The promise of HTML5 cross-platform development finally
    comes true with CocoonJS.

    About Ludei
Ludei, based in San Francisco, is the creator of
CocoonJS, a mobile gaming platform used by HTML5 game developers
publishers to most effectively deploy, run and monetize their games
on iOS and Android devices. Ludei is funded by Spain-based startup
accelerator, Ideateca. To learn more go to

JavaScript The Evil Parts – You Can’t Maintain It.

In a recent panel discussion at Lang.NEXT, Anders Hejlsberg claimed that JavaScript programs aren’t maintainable.

It is almost a shame to have to focus in on a few lines of what is an interesting discussion. If you know just a little of more than one programming language, you will find this video fascinating and instructive.

In case you don’t know the panel, Anders Hejlsberg, Gilad Bracha, Martin Odersky, and Peter Alvaro are some of the most influential language experts. Anders Hejlsberg brought us Turbo Pascal, Delphi and C#, not to mention the whole idea of .NET.  Gilad Bracha invented Newspeak and is currently the main behind Google’s Dart. Martin Odersky is the man who invented the Scala programming language. Peter Alvaro is perhaps lesser known, but as a PhD student working on the intersection of database and distributed systems, he has a lot of interesting things to say and brings a different perspective to the chat.

As the moderator, Erik Meijer, points out the panel has a wide range of views on language design and on role of data typing in particular.

Watch the video and I promise you will be entertained and informed by the diversity of viewpoints – if only the sound quality were better there would be nothing to complain about. If you haven’t the time to watch the entire video and really want to know what was said about JavaScript, jump to around 11 minutes or read the account below:

(we are working on getting a better quality video should be ready very soon)

    Anders Hejlsberg:

“…a new cross platform language called JavaScript and the typesystem went out with the bath water. Now we can all wonder how we do medium to large scale development.

    Erik Meijer:

“…Are you saying you cannot write large programs in JavaScript?”

    Anders Hejlsberg:

“No, I think you can, but I don’t think you can maintain them.”

The laughter at this point is telling of the opinion and attitude of the audience and the panel.

    Anders Hejlsberg:

“… I tried a refactor in a big JavaScript program. Is this x the same as this x over there? I’m afraid I couldn’t tell you.”

From here the discussion goes on to explain that this is the reason Google is creating Dart:

    Gilad Bracha:

“…you can write them (large JavaScript programs) but after that you will be suitably punished.”

    Erik Meijer:

“.. but if you look at JavaScript it was defined independently of HTML”

    Gilad Bracha:

”That’s true but combining two bad things does not make them better. “

From here the talk goes on to other interesting topics, mostly with an undercurrent of strong typing v weak typing.

So what can we conclude – is JavaScript evil?

Up to a point yes, but the solution ins’t necessarily a new language. Good tools that help you discover whether “this x the same as this x over there” are essentially as good as introducing new language constructs. If you can write a big program, you can maintain it if the tools to do so are good enough – in the case of JavaScript they are virtually non-existent.

If you have a hammer then every screw looks like a nail.

If you have a panel of language geeks then every problem needs a new language to solve it.

For Anders Hejlsberg the ideas he expressed in the discussion must be very difficult to maintain in a Microsoft world where JavaScript is now a first-class language alongside the elegant C#.

Microsoft once had the role of a leader in language design and implementation. Even if you don’t like strong typing and prefer another language paradigm you have to admire C# and the .NET system as being an intelligent approach to programming. Given Microsoft’s current disdain for languages and language development, it would come as no surprise if Anders Hejlsberg was looking for a new home – the only question is where is there a suitable powerbase capable of supporting something as large and ambitious as .NET.

JavaScript isn’t evil – it’s just different and it’s here to stay. We need to learn to live with it.

The New Bettendorf Rotary Club Website

Working with Terrostar Technology Solutions on the Bettendorf Rotary website was a very smooth and rewarding experience

Quad Cities Iowa and Illinois (PRWEB) June 06, 2012

The Bettendorf Rotary Club has launched the new and improved http://www.bettendorfrotary.com to help grow its membership and bolster the organization overall. The website design and website programming were donated entirely by Quad Cities Website Design and Internet Marketing firm, Terrostar Technology Solutions.

Originally launched nine years ago, the old website has won multiple awards from Rotary International. “We hope the new version will do the same,” says Terrostar’s Director of Client Relations, Chris Glass. “Our goal was to give the Bettendorf Rotary a website that was more visually appealing and that allowed the Rotary to showcase its role in the Quad Cities community,” he added.

The new website has an intuitive navigation system, more information about the Bettendorf Rotary and its upcoming events, along with multimedia and social share features. For Rotary members, Terrostar developed a member center that allows them to update their personal information, pay dues online using a simple ecommerce feature, and to search for fellow Rotarians. The website is powered by a content management system that makes updating it quick and easy for Bettendorf Rotary volunteers.

According to Bettendorf Rotary Club President, Scott Naumann, “Working with Terrostar Technology Solutions on the Bettendorf Rotary website was a very smooth and rewarding experience. The original site they designed for us back in 2003 won two separate awards from Rotary, and I suspect that our newest website will continue that tradition as it truly is an award winning website. Terrostar’s donation and continued support of the Bettendorf Rotary is a blessing, and we are so proud to have a partner like Terrostar. I would recommend them to any company looking to create a new website, or redesign an existing one. Thank you Terrostar for such a great experience, and a great website.”

New HTML5 control blends Web with native mobile apps

A new HTML5 Browser Control lets enterprise mobile app developers quickly blend dynamic Web content with native and hybrid apps, using the cross-platform tools and middleware from Verivo Software.

With the new component, which is part of Verivo’s AppStudio toolset, Web developers can use their HTML and Javascript skills to build mobile apps that can access a range of back-end enterprise databases and apps. And the Browser Control lets existing HTML5 content be quickly incorporated into mobile apps, alongside native app components.

BACKGROUND: Four reasons to jump to HTML5

A recent survey of enterprise software coders found higher-than-expected interest in HTML5 for mobile apps. [See "Interest in HTML5 growing among mobile developers"] Seventy-nine percent of nearly 2,200 mobile developers in the study said they will use HTML5 in their apps in 2012, a big jump compare to an earlier survey in late 2011.

Verivo’s introduction of its new Browser Control, and its roadmap for future HTML5 features, is part of a trend by application tools vendors to use the emerging HTML5 standards in building and deploying mobile applications. These applications can run inside a HTML5 browser or be wrapped as part of a native application, to display Web content.

Rivals such as SAP’s Sybase Unwired Platform, Antenna Software, Appcelerator, Appsbar and many others, offer competing services but there are wide differences in their approach, architecture and capabilities.

Mozilla.org, creator of the Firefox Web browser, has even greater ambitions for HTML5: making it the basis for eliminating conventional mobile operating systems, and instead replacing them with a very small Linux kernel and drivers, to support Mozilla’s Gecko rendering engine. Coupled with a growing array of new APIs, and a user interface dubbed Gaia, the platform can fully control the phone and its features without the complexity of a conventional OS. [See: "Mozilla's 'modest proposal:' Dump the smartphone OS"]

The Verivo package has three parts. AppStudio is a drag-and-drop designer for laying out a mobile app. The app is stored as an XML configuration file on the Verivo Server, which is a middleware server that supports interfaces to back-end databases and applications as well as a variety of optimization services such as user authentication and data compression. Finally, the Verivo Client, on Android, iOS or BlackBerry OS, logs into the server and authenticates, and then the appropriate app configuration file for that mobile OS is downloaded to the client and instantiated.

In a demo of Verivo’s existing native app capabilities, a change made in AppStudio to the central XML configuration file for a mobile CRM application was almost at once reflected in the corresponding app running on simulators for a Samsung Android phone, an iPhone and a BlackBerry smartphone.

Verivo’s Browser Control works with the embedded Web control offered by each mobile OS’s software development kit: This Web control, with an embedded rendering engine, lets a native app access and display Web content without resorting to the separate full Web browser. Verivo wraps that Web control with a rich set of HTML5 interactive features.

In a demo of the new component, for an app running on an iPad simulator, the same CRM app was displayed initially, showing a static chart of sales analytics data. Using AppStudio, Mark Rosenbaum, Verivo’s director of sales engineering, quickly made changes in a couple of menu selections that redirected the mobile app from the static chart to a highly interactive HTML5 chart, created by a third-party charting app and hosted on a Web server. After logging back into the original iPad CRM app, Rosenbaum now saw the dynamic Web chart: He was able to adjust data variables and see chart trends change in response, and drill down for more detailed information.

The chart, when updated automatically or manually on the server, would display the most current data whenever users subsequently worked with the app.

Later this year, Verivo will update the new Browser Control to expand integration between HTML5 and native components; release a Web Client to run Verivo-designed and -built apps fully in any HTML5 browser; and a Javascript API that can be used by any Verivo-built app or HTML5 content to tie into such Verivo Server features as authentication and back-end system interfaces.

Verivo’s software is priced on a per-CPU basis for the Verivo server, with separate developer licenses for staff using AppStudio to create apps. Companies can distribute as many clients and apps as they want, for example. You add servers, and server licenses, as the number of clients increase. Pricing starts at about $80,000, which includes servers for development and testing as well as production. The new HTML5 Browser Control is included at no charge with AppStudio.
